Thanks for the responses. I have to agree that I just think the smiley guy was just like too many other characters and had no where to go. Our grumpier, "constipated" doc appeals to me more because then when he does open up a bit it really reaches down inside me and pulls at my heart.
Speaking of constipated - we have never talked about the fact that he asked Mrs T for glycerin suppositories. Any other use for those????
I think Martin Clunes likes to have the Doc ask for the most embarrassing things from Mrs. Tishell. (Just a glimpse of our real boy there.)

I believe he asked for glycerin suppositories for baby James Henry. They are commonly used for infants that don't poop. (Excuse my graphic language but some of us are Moms here, as well as my professional background...really, pediatricians are down in trenches.). Pessary rings however...

But he did not ask for pediatric suppositories...just sayin'. And the pessary ring would not have been for his use so maybe he was just restocking the surgery, heh???
At least when he asked for the paracetamol we got some clarification.
That scene stuck in my mind because up to that point I felt Mrs T had kept this pretty much bottled up inside, but that moment was a glimpse into how deep her feelings went and also, the reactions of the villagers to both her and LG/DM.
The village rallied around Louisa. And if you think about it, in this circumstance the Doc really did just "go with the flow". His first response was to ask if Louisa wanted to get married but afterward he just took his place in line. He went after her, he was at the birth, drove her home, stayed with her, went to the chemist, took her to see the doctor - and, Oh, you all know this - why didn't she? ----OH, OH, OH, what will S6 bring us
Still skinny but looks healthy . I guess that's a good sign. Oh, I can't wait.
Great! I loved this comment someone made:
"What she has omitted to say is that he is a lot fitter in the flesh......quite a hunk! We were both verrrrrrry impressed".

Over time there have certainly been many here who said they much prefer the S1/2 Doc. So, my question is, how or what would have been different in either the later series (our grumpier Doc) or in the earlier (a kindler gentler Doc) if we had been blessed with only one or the other.
I rewatched the first few episodes of S1 last evening and he seemed all over the place to me. I was noting un-Doc-like behaviors - smiles, Yeah, Yep, open suit coat, going to Elaine's father's wedding - but S1E2 had much more our grumpy Doc.
So, I am wondering, in thinking back to some pivotal moments - the proposal, the un-wedding, the baby, or even some of the events of 1 and 2, how would they have been different if the "other" DM had been alive in that particular scene or episode.
You raise an interesting point as I am one of those who preferred the Season 1, 2 and even 3 doc to, especially, season 5. I guess the real question is if doc became the grumpier, humor-free man we saw in seasons 4 and 5, what do we want him to be in Season 6? With the humanizing influence of Louisa and James Henry, will he revert to Season 1 and 2 doc with some wry humor and personality tempered by justified grumpiness with the villagers? Or will he be the same as in Season 5 - loving to James but not so much to Louisa? What is the balance for him?
Thanks! Good photos. I wonder about the one where they seem to be filming upstairs, possibly through a window. What building is that? Could be someone else's upstairs.

That's the building in Port Gaverne that they used last series for the police station. I think I read somewhere that they were using it for the same purpose again this year. I do know that the interior shots (all on the main floor) were filmed in that building because you could see the port through the windows.
Have you seen the fan club photos from yesterday evening? I'm not skilled enough to set up a link but you know how to get there. All I can say is OMG. Wish I could share some of that Piddle Beer (yes that's it's name)

I tool it that DM tried at first not to have the village against him from day one. So he went to the wedding, against better judgement. He didn't look like he had some fun.
And what good did it do him? He was forced to re-hire that dreadful Elaine, and to top it all, Elaine made a list of demands:eek:.
Did any villager appreciate his efforts? No.
So, that's how I read it, DM simply gave up to be liked and did what came naturally to him. Doing his duty and not caring about his neighbors. Besides, I didn't really see that many people in Portwenn that could have been entertaining company for the Doc.

I think you're right, Renee. Seems to have become a little running joke and I think it's one MC enjoys. Didn't the Doc also once ask Mrs. T for something for a fungus and she asked if it was just for the feet or the "dhobie" itch?
DmBesotted, I agree with you that the grumpier Doc is less like other TV characters, very much just "the Doc", and it means, when he does have a breakthrough, it really gets to us. It's such a huge big deal!
Yay! Here are more filming photos. I think these are from this morning. Three of the Doc, two of Penhale, and one of Buddy. Cute. And I'm not just referring to the dog . Be warned before you click. There's a plot spoiler in the comments.

I read all the comments and can't find a spoiler? Can someone spell it out for me please?
It's in the comments for photo #2, the second one of MC/DM. Not a huge deal, just info about that particular ep's plot, or sub-plot. Here it is:
Teresa are you in Port Gaverne? doesn't look as crowded as yesterday on Roscarrock Hill. Glad for you as it is such a treat to be that close and chat. Thanks for sharing your encounter with the Doc.
Yes, we were. And the big blue sheets were part of the set; evidently it
had an "asbestos removal" theme....

Well, he did pick up pessary rings once, too.

Looks like a bedroom scene, well they seem to be filming upstairs anyway. Hmmm.
Also found this on facebook, lots of great photos

There's that green jacket, Shop Girl.

Yeah - now I'm really confused about the jacket. Looks like we will have to wait to see who wears it
I did recognize the tie though - he has worn that one in S3, 4 & 5!

Oh no - this site doesn't let me on - could you do the plot spoiler here as a "spoiler" pretty please?
I'm back to the wilderness tomorrow - I can't decide whether I should even try to keep up with DM - I should just wait until S6
