Roll on Into The Woods (2014?) - Meryl as the Witch. A proper musical to get her teeth into.
She will have some big shoes to fill from Bernadette Peters. I was disappointed she wasn't allowed to be the Witch. She was superb in that, albeit a few moons ago...
That isn't Jodie Foster singing. Even as a child, I wondered why such a husky voiced girl would have a high pitched dubbed voice.
Also, someone mentioned Dorothy Danridge in Carmen Jones. She was dubbed by an opera singer.
And Deborah Kerr was dubbed in King & I...
Unless we aren't referring to actual singing performances here...
I would have to say anything with the triple threat, Judy Garland. Meet me in St Louis being my favourite.
For men, it would be Gordon Macrae in Carousel. And Donald O'Connor in Call Me Madam.
I am old school and most musicals past Jesus Christ Superstar just can't compete for me.
Old school too:). Just reminded me of another really old musical performer I've always liked: Joan Blondell in various Warner movies, esp. Golddiggers of 1933, Footlight Parade and Dames. Beauty and sass .
V.good point re: dubbed performers; I guess included them in this category as acting alone pretty damned fine. And yes, shame about Bernadette Peters also. Her 'You Belong To Me' with Steve Martin in The Jerk is probably another one could go here.
Judy Garland in A Star is Born is my all time favourite musical performance, and I saw many of them on the big screen in the 1940's, and '50's. She was also unforgettable in Meet Me in St Louis and Easter Parade.
My favourite Doris Day performances are in Love Me or Leave Me, and the underrated, The Pajama Game.
I also thought that Marilyn and Jane Russell were both sensational in Gentleman Prefer Blondes.:)

Oh I do know it wasn't actually her singing it. I put it in because I think Jodie did a great job of "playing " the song. Especially for the age she was.
Julie Andrews and Robert Preston in Victor Victoria
Colm Wilkinson - les Miserables. Even in that small role he shone and wiped the floor with Hugh Jackman
Tommy Steele in Half a Sixpence
Ron Moody stealing every scene in Oliver
Cliff Richard and Melvyn Hayes in Summer Holiday (guily pleasure)
