I truly believe that these are two of the most talented female vocalists that this nation has uncovered in a generation. They are I believe severley overlooked due to the fact they are from a talent show, which I find incredibly annoying, they are fantastic singers. So I want to leave this question to those who may have voted for them on the show, listened to their music and bought their records.
How can they salvage their career and get back to the top - In terms of artistic direction, song choices, image, even down to management, what should these girls be doing to ensure that they get back to where they belong the TOP!
Can they salvage their careers ?

If people don't want to buy their music then just go for the smaller market as many many bands do, but then you have to gig your arse off, for which you then get slagged off for on here as you aren't playing stadiums.
People off talent shows will never win over the public
For me the difference between both, i feel Alex shows the passion to succeed, while Leona lacks that
Alex is going for a more R&B sound and is readying an EP for America this year, with an album coming later and has been working with Rico Love, Vinylz (who produced a track on Jay-Z's new album) and has recently been in contact with Claude Kelly as well. She's also signing a brand new record deal, she's now totally free of Sony and Syco completely. She just performed at Apollo Theater in New York last month which is legendary and shared the stage with Chaka Khan, Mary J, Jennifer H and more, and got Beyoncé's choreographer JaQuel to do the routine for her performance.
I would say Alexandra has made several major steps already to getting back on top.
Leona's situation is a little more tricky, but she is readying a Christmas album and is going to put a Motown spin on it, but more importantly it will be her last contracted album with Syco so it will be interesting to see what she does next.
Both these ladies have talent, and that's something that no-one can take away from them. Neither of them have built their careers on looks or celebrity status, they are gifted and I think their talent will always find ways to be heard. Whether either of them return to massive commercial success remains to be seen, but the industry is unpredictable, so we'll see.
Leona has dumped her old management and apparently signed to a new management company, we don't know who though, so hopefully they will be better.
It looks like they are trying to recapture her Spirit audience. She is currently recording a Xmas album and the follow up to Glassheart at the same time, so Syco may be hoping the Xmas album will pull in the AC market and remind them of Leona and will hopefully follow it up a few months later with a brand new album while their is still interest in her.
It also looks like she is going back to Pop/R&B, due to them seeking those style of songs, which I think is the right decision.

I know alot of people think the Xmas album is a career ending mistake, but they do have potential to sell well if she really promotes it well and it would appeal to a large section of the audience who bought Spirit. I really hope they can find at least one great new Xmas song, she said she will have original material, but I mean one that radio will love and it will sell well.
Maybe an exception but Kelly Clarkson has done alright for herself!
sorry, I generalised a bit
It maybe isn't good for credibility, and probably won't appeal to many young people, but I think there will be interest for it among the AC market.
Leona....she had all the material for a huge era with Glassheart, but wrong singles were chosen.
Alex is fixing the issues with her career here and has upped sticks to a place where her team care about her and want her to do well. She was only properly pushed here and England is NOT the only country in the world.
Leona's issue is bigger. She's being sabotaged imho. She has to repair her image worldwide, which Alex doesn't have to. It's easier to launch something than repair major damage.
Also it's a song thing. Alex lacked a strong budget and it has sadly showed (until now). Leona has/d that but her team are clueless.
In short, Alex needs killer songs which suit her and has to prove herself overseas which she's beginning the process of doing, but Leona needs/ed to release the right ones and also do more promotion. I believe each has had their time here, and ought to stop focusing on this country.
I think Alexandra can, she really has a great team behind her now and they seem to be making the right steps with her. It looks like she is forgetting about the UK for now and her priority is America.
I agree about Leona, it is incredibly frustrating at how different the last year could have been for Leona if she and Syco choose the right singles to release.
There seems to be less stigma associated to American Idol winners, since Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have launched pretty sustainable careers, whereas I can't think of anyone from X factor in the Uk that has a had that length of a career.
It's funny. People hate Louis Walsh but were rushing to his defence, despite her being right in what she said. She didn't tell a lie at all. Ah pop fans are fickle.
Leona definitely will make a comeback
They are both talented and quite capable of making a comeback, it's all down to management and material ATM.
Which is the root of ANY act's success in music. Management, material and a damn good budget. Good/smart marketing helps too.
Alex performed a lot in between her debut and her follow up, which partially explains Elephant doing well in it's first week. But you need airplay to sustain sales, which she lacked from Radio 1 and Capital pre-release. Leona didn't do as much, but tbh X Factor was massive in 2009, so she didn't really need to as such. Although she definitely should've had toured.
She toured twice
Yeah I am a big Leona fan and I didn't like the Hackney performance either, I think a big part of it was her song choices. Like she is capable of doing festivals and shows like that, she has done them in the past well, that one just didn't come together well. I love her Rock In Rio performaces, particularly this one,

I also really like this performances from a film festival she did,

It's not her best performance, but I really like it just because she is so relaxed and clearly enjoying herself. I think Leona would have probably been suited to one of the smaller stages at Hackney Festival, she
Not during album #1 and #2 she didn't
Recent Idol winners haven't been anywhere near as successful. Reality TV isn't the platform for launching careers as it used to be.
