SUNDAY WITH GAY BYRNE
A Christmas Gala with Jessie Buckley
This Christmas Day join Gay Byrne for A Christmas Gala featuring Jessie Buckley with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and conductor David Arnold. The bright young star of musical theatre who came to public prominence in the BBC's 'I'd Do Anything' and who made such an impressive début with the RTÉ NSO in July, returns by popular demand. In this seasonal performance she sings all-time Christmas favourites and jazz standards made famous by Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and more.
(Recorded live at the National Concert Hall on the 22nd of December)
Jessie did her Barbican concert on Wednesday. This year they have two sopranos to share the workload. She's singing Don't Rain On My Parade from Funny Girl, I Dreamed a Dream, The Trolley Song from Meet Me in St Louis, Somewhere Over The Rainbow from Wizard of Oz and The man That Got away From A Star Is Born - plus the group numbers. Jessie power and emotion plus a lot of range - I Dreamed a Dream is beautifully acted after another year of RADA - i'de cast her for that too. Lurking in the group songs there's a very capable Sandy for Grease, an Eponine in Heartful of Love from Les Mis and a Scaramouche from WWRY. Someone else sang Defying Gravity- which might have also been interesting for Jessie. The concert is back next year, though no confirmation of cast. Jessie was 22 on the 28th.
I was at the equivalent concert in B'Ham. The large extra lady who sang Memories and Defying Gravity was not up to standard, the tone of her voice changed significantly at each step up her singing register.
I always wonder if Jessie had arrived on our screens a year later for Dorothy rather than Nancy how things would have changed for her. Her Over the Rainbow is something else.
Her version of The Man who got Away with the jazz pianist at the Dankworth place near Milton Keynes was so fantastic that last night's version with the orchestra was a little disappointing. Networkbabe, you seem to have kept in touch, what has happened in her relationship with the jazz pianist?

Don't know. Jessie's http://jessiebuckleyfanblog.blogspot.com/ was the best source for her cabarets but its become quiet (as, indeed, have Siobhan and Francesca's fanblogspots) Jessie isn't on twitter so no info there either. Her facebook page is becoming more active, but doesn't advertise whats coming up. Joe Thompson's own site hasn't been updated in ages.http://www.joethompson.net/ Jessie's not playing greenwich again this year, or any of the pizza express musical venues in their winter programme. Its a case of having to look every now and again to see whats on. Jessie may just be doing the big concerts, and the two in Dublin were very big, or she may be doing other things at places that don't get advertised?
Not sure about Dorothy. As its been directed, Danielle and Sophie seem to have been told to lay back on OTR, and there's not much else thats that big a song to sing in Wizard' after OTR appears early in act one. Not at all sure what ALW was really looking for. Anne in Little Night Music looked an even bigger contrast to act - what with the accent, the character and the comedy. If she can sing Grease, Mamma Mia, The Sound of Music and the US classics and Les Mis, and can dance them, Jessie hopefully will be able to go for a wide range of roles one day - like Lauren?
The Barbican audience seemed very impressed with the Sound of Musicals, including the larger lady. Some of the renditions were a little operatic and with only a couple of singers you don't always always get people who are cast for the right age or play the role fully . If you have recently seen Rachel sing Defying Gravity in Wicked or John Owen Jones/Katie Hall in Phantom or Katie ever sing Cosette, there's a steep hill to climb though for anyone to compare with them -even if they can get the notes. I thought it was brave for anyone to even try Love Never Dies - it ought to come with a ALW almost impossible to sing well enough label (though Helena does it really well in some of her cabarets)
I looked online the other evening wondering what had happened to Jessie because she really did have such presence and a bit of magic about her.
Many singers can belt out a tune but even if they do it well, it can be surprisingly dull to hear and see if someone can't create an atmosphere.
Jessie has a star quality and I think it would be very sad if she doesn't get the chances she deserves.

Jessie doesn't seem to be doing any of her old regular performances this year. The big touring xmas musicals show isn't on - or rather it is on- but in October in Manchester and Birmingham. Interestingly Ruthie Henshall is filling Jessie's place . Jessie isn't yet listed as doing anything again for RTE. Sophie from OTR has picked up a big pre-xmas Albert Hall concert and is also playing the Elgar room where Jessie was last seen.
However, there's news of what Jessie has been doing.
Rada puts up every year a section on their third (final year) actors giving them a write up and CV and detailing what roles they have been playing at RADA. There's also some recordings of them reading and playing roles. This is the link http://www.rada.ac.uk/profiles?pg=1
RADA does put on public shows http://www.rada.ac.uk/whats-on but don't say who is in them. Jessie's also not on twitter like the OTR girls at drama school - who all seem to be going to each others third year shows......
Interestingly, her CV mentions her aptitude for accents. Whereas Barrowman, at the peak of his criticisms, was proclaiming her inability with cockney. Nevertheless, I believe her singing is her real talent, having been to many of her gigs with Thomson, ridiculously good.

Wowsa.:):) Well spotted. Don't see the inside of the Guardian unless it shows up on their net frontpage or a net search .........even her agent hasn't put it up yet..
If you want a vehicle to show you can act at the end of your course, and great people to work with, you can't do much better than Shakespeare with Roger Allam (who won the Olivier for Falstaff at the Globe in 2010 and was the original Javert) and Colin Morgan who has just won the NTA Male Drama performance award........
On the other side of the equation , there's not much on in the way of non dance musicals/juke box musicals/musicals with male leads or musicals not wanting older leading roles at the moment. My diary is very empty. Helena has just done a play, Nancy Sullivan is on her second play, Amy is in her second play for the National Theatre, Siobhan is auditioning for US TV, and Sophie's just done a film. By the end of this month only Danielle, Lauren, Helena and Keisha, from all the female ALW shows, I think will actually be in a musical.
Showing what a small world it is , he also reviews Jerry Springer at the Guildford School of Acting in that article - which had Emilie in it playing Baby Jane, and joins in the widespread praise for the leads and dancing in Arts Ed's Kiss of the Spider Woman - where Jessica was dance captain. if I remember right.....
I saw Jessie in The Tempest today. She was wonderful and just as beautiful as ever. Oh, and she delivered the entire role in a perfect English accent
Saw it Thursday. She seems to be having fun. She's got a bit of almost everything to do - an accent, some dramatic moments,a romance, lots of comedy , a dance, a jig and one song - where she sounds really good singing alongside Roger Allam who is musical theatre as well as Shakespearian royalty. His timing is a masterclass and must be great to watch in your first post RADA role. There's a lot of recognisable Jessie touches in there too .
The Standard and Times have both done pieces on her as Miranda - but they are both behind their paywalls.
There's a range of very good reviews of Jessie in the Tempest. - though you should habitually add two stars to anything Letts gives any show.
With some nice pictures dotted through some of them.

The Colin Morgan fans have been swarming over the Tempest. With the good result that there's some youtubes with flashes of Jessie.
There's a brief one of the action where Ariel is watching over the young Prince Ferdinand as he arrives on the island , and the prince is spotted by Miranda/Jessie and her dad Prospero. Prospero is the only male Jessie hast seen .......its Jessie at 2-15 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD1Yb9jlCrI&list=PLlbrWecyKb_eAXA_La3ZjTYMUqTO3sKy6
Note the added helicopter and jet effects..........
Is Jesse now a member of the Globe Theatre company. At the way out from the Globe was given a flyer for a production of the play called 'Gabriel' starting in July with Jesse on the cast list.

Good discovery - they don't list the casts till lateish so i hadn't spotted that.
They tend to have people from one play playing in another. There's often more than one play running at once using different time slots or days. There's also not many Tempests in July if I recall. Had a look and 10 of the Tempest cast are playing in Gabriel. A lot of people who are in the Tempest are also Globe regulars - so there is a loose company that turns up over the years, in that sense.
The hope is that they have been filming and producing DVDs of their main plays for the last few years - hopefully we may get one of the Tempest next year.....?

The Tempest was filmed on Wednesday evening and will definitely be available as a DVD next year.

There was a camera set up for the matinee that day so they may have been getting ready. Hope Colin Morgan turned up - he was off sick for the matinee and I think some other shows that week - the video will look odd if there's a bloke carrying a script playing Ariel.........Thought they might film the midnight show as there's no helicopters or jets then.....

Grateful if anyone who spots anything she's in could post. Jessie's not on twitter or active on facebook, as far as I can see, and her agents don't release much news. She's also potentially going to be seen doing almost anything from musicals to drama, established or new, of all types ,and cabarets anywhere.I only found the cabaret because Rachel twittered it.

She's also able to look and sound very different - which should hopefully open many roles for her.
