I don't think it was an explanation for the viewers - the hospital and family were trying to find a explanation... and the only explanation the family could come up with conveniently made Jérôme out to be a bad guy vs Pierre's (apparent) good guy and further drove a wedge between Claire and Jérôme. Good for the plot but I agree with Rachymac - that thing on Léna's back did not arise from her falling and injuring her back a year earlier.
However, I don't expect any further explanation... I think it's just a twin thing...
I agree with this. The explanation that is was septic wasn't for us, it was for the family as no-one had a better explanation.
I think (hope), that in series 2 we will get an explanation about why the dark furriness, followed by skin peeling off happens. I don't expect a specific one about Lena, as I imagine it is as others have said, the twin thing. I hope there will bean explanation of the significance of it for all the returnees though.
I think some people are looking way too far into things, and others are missing the point of the program. It's supposed to be mysterious. Not everything is supposed to be explained or have a reason.
Anyway, here's what i got from it - The "Returned" are made from the water in the lake, hence the reason for the water level in the lake dropping even though there are no visible cracks. That also explains why every person who returns comes climbing from the banks of the damn.
In order to sustain their lives as "Humans" and prevent themselves from rotting they need to eat constantly and keep replenishing themselves with water from the lake. When they can't do this they start to rot away.
This is why the Hordes with no families have to eat wild animals in the forest (as seen a few episodes earlier) and this is why the police man caught a crazed and rotting "returned" desperately drinking water from the toilet to sustain himself.
The lake is evil, there's some kind of evil within it that has yet to b explained but it has been hinted at on The Returned website where serge's diary entry says that the water hypnotized him as a child and the water brought a dead deer back to life. He also then said after he had re-killed the deer he felt the urge to place water from the lake inside it's carcus. As if he was feeding the water.
As for the rest. No idea - i'll wait and see what happens.

yeah I was going to say something similar, I don't think Serge or Mrs Costa showed signs of rotting did they? and Mrs Costa was constantly eating and Serge was still going into the lake and using the water etc.
Some of the others were hungry when they first returned but didn't keep up with their food intake.
thought he went back inside the helping hand to Adele and Chloe and then came out later on with everyone else? feel sure we saw him at the end looking at the flooded town?
He definitely stayed outside but just before the doors were shut and the shooting started he told the young male gendarme with a full head of hair to stay inside and make sure no-one got in.
The Wikipedia article on show says
Alcide, a young gendarme attracted to Lucy, and the only apparent survivor of the town's gendarmes following the final shoot-out.
What about Laure?? I can't remember what happened to her
The returnees we've been watching for most of the series still have family so have naturally tried to reintegrate with them.
In Camille's case we know she wasn't aware of the other returned, so she didn't have the option of staying with them. I suspect that's true of the other named characters - I don't think Simon recognised Mrs Costa at the bar, for example. They all died at different places, and they all came back at different places too.
Where-as I suspect the hoard all came back at roughly the same place, probably because they all died in the same incident and at the same place: in the flood. That's why they were able to stay together.
There may be more to it than that. The horde knew to seek out Lucy, and apparently knew where to find her, so they seem to have a supernatural knowledge that the named returned lack. (Camille knows stuff about Léna: I take that to be a twin thing rather than returning thing. Lucy knows stuff too, but I take that to be a medium thing.) It may be this knowledge that made them stick together.
And why on earth build the new town beneath the new dam?
Because there was no-where else to build it. I think it is fairly common. For example, Vajont Dam had a village below it. Another is Langarone.(Google mostly seems to find villages where the dam broke.)
This is what I thought. I thought he viewed it as Simon trying to cheat on the agreement and get one over on him in the love triangle. I don't believe Thomas thinks Adele is one of the returned and he certainly doesn't know she is pregnant.
Didn't Lucy say they were missing one and it was Adele's baby? Or am I making that up...not had a chance for a second viewing yet
Lucy asked for the missing one... Adèle... then I think Simon (or was it Lucy?) whispered to Chloé who trotted off and whispered to Maman that they wanted her - Adèle - then Chloé qualified the statement by saying the bébé... so Chloé delivered the joyful news to Adèle.
Does anyone remember the first episode when the woman was burnt alive in the house but then the body was gone when the fireman went in? Who was that and the man?
That was the wonderful Mrs Costa who appeared just about everywhere that food or drink was available. She had a nice line in dry wit too.
The man who burned down the house and subsequently took a dive off the top of the dam was her husband... well, widower of... 30+ years. I think he burned her because he thought she was an incarnation of the devil. The sort of thing that someone of his age in one of these villages (which would have been cut off for months each year) would be quite likely to believe.
Looking at the present day town on the website, it seems to be at all sorts of different levels below the dam, with the underpass being pretty high up - which really surprised me, and I can't work out what exactly it is passing under!
the underpass or le tunnel is going under a block of flats (I think)
I couldn't work out why people were using the underpass when there appeared to be no traffic on the road - I assumed the underpass went under the road as a way for people to cross the road but it doesn't - it goes under a block of flats!!!!!! It seems to be the only way for people to get from the what looks like a pedestrianised shopping place to a bus stop

I think you're taking some of the website a bit too literally, it's just making jumps between places. We always saw the road going above the tunnel on the actual show.

Exactly. It's not Google Street View. In any case, the website shows a composite town because filming takes place in different towns in the area. The barrage at Tignes is about 2 hours drive from Annecy, for eg.
From Wiki:
The series was shot in Haute-Savoie, mainly in the city of Annecy, and also in Menthon-Saint-Bernard, Poisy, Cran-Gevrier, Sévrier, Annecy-le-Vieux, Veyrier-du-Lac and Semnoz. The dam which plays an important part is the Barrage de Tignes.

Im fully aware its not google street view - Im not stupid! To me, the underpass goes under a block of flats - its meant to be a website for the series, so I assumed that the website would be a correct layout of the town, silly me for assuming

I haven't gone onto that site yet - saving it for when withdrawal symptoms kick in big time and I'm just a section order away from a locked psychiatric ward
I know the area around Annecy quite well and it's amazing how quickly you can get off the beaten track, away from the retail parks and towns with all their amenities to places where anything is possible ...
And when one of those heavy downpours floods the road and drenches you to the skin or the the snow starts to fall and shows no sign of stopping you become consious of how fragile you are and how easily things can very quickly go wrong as a result of the forces of nature. Many people die in this region every year because nature caught them unawares → la horde?
Hope season 2 is set in winter, unforgiving winter, when the fight for survival is at its strongest ...
Just caught up with this thread and have to say what a pleasure it is to be arrogantly talked down to by others that know it all. Silly me for wasting my time discussing a tv programme with others that enjoyed it.

Wow! Interesting theory- I like it a lot!

Thanks for the link. Wow, a must read for some excellent extras not mentioned in the series.
