Surely the first day of the week is sunday.
The weekend is saturday, end of one week , sunday the beginning of the next.

Why is there any debate about it?
Not even now, and I work Sundays.
Our culturally Christian heritage is based around God resting on the seventh day - which is Sunday.
Monday is therefore the first day of the week.
I can understand how there is some confusion though. When I was a kid (late '60's/early '70's), some calendars had the week running Sunday to Saturday with Sunday as the first day of the week. I seem to remember this being explained to me that Sunday was the lords day so it was the first day of the week. Didn't make much sense then and still doesn't now.
Nobody would ever say "I'll meet you at 1pm on the first day of next week", or "the contract ends at 12pm on the 4th". They'd say exactly what they mean.
A week has two ends Sunday (the start) and saturday (the finish)
they are the ends of the week, like a piece of string.
Only lazy buggers and shift workers think the day begins 12pm.
For real.
Say what? A day begins at midnight! I've never heard anyone debate the starting point of a day, least not to say it started at midday!
