Personally I don't think his acting was that good.
But he improved as time went by. He his, a lovely man, who always has time for fans. I've Worked with him many times and he's always been professional and kind to fans and he show, so he's ok in my book
Ah, Sylvester. Quite early on I thought he showed promise despite some pretty bad material, and by 'Delta...' had really warmed to him;it just wasn't a great time for the show generally post 'suspension' and Colin's awful treatment. In Seasons 25 and 26 I thought he gave some very good performances (Remembrance, Greatest Show, Ghostlight, Fenric) and can see why he's popular with many. Good thing too because he had a bit of a kicking from certain parts of fandom at the time, I recall.
Yep, might not be in my personal top 3, but definitely have a soft spot for Doctor 7.

Please, please stop me if this is too personal a question, may I ask what job you have. I'm guessing one meeting people like him must be quite enjoyable at times
He is my Doctor, so I will always love him. I don't have a top three anyway. Mostly the Doctor I'm watching is my favourite Doctor (if that makes sense). So if I'm watching one with Tom Baker, then he is my favourite, and if I watch an episode with Colin then he is my favourite.
He is so underrated as the Doctor. I would put him in the top three, with Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker.
Snap. Those are my top three too.
AND this is from someone who is old enough to remember the first ever episode. I was one of the kiddlies hiding behind the sofa .....:D
I always felt McCoy was short-changed and should have had a longer stint. It always seemed he had a darker side - the clowning and silly clothes hid a more serious Doctor - we only saw his true power every now and again.
His first season seemed to be trying to hard to play to his being a comedian. His last might be viewed as a prototype for the new series with the arc involving the companion, the Doctor having an agenda and the mystery behind him. Besides which Remembrance might be the start of the Time War, although Genesis could be another contender.
Sadly the candle of greatness of the series was at the wick by the time he started, but he didn't really do much for me either as a Doctor.
Any old duffer with an equity card, eh?
The more he deliberately over-rolled his R's and flailed his limbs the more I kept shuddering.
Did feel a bit am-dram at times, for shame.
He also needed to give Ace a good shake and say "MY NAME IS THE DOCTOR! STOP CALLING ME PROFESSOR YOU DOZY MARE! You're about as street as a broadway musical teen gang, stop pretending you're hardcore!"
I'm sure he's a lovely man but sometimes fandom confuses off-screen niceness with on-screen quality, and this era wasn't it.
His era's version of the theme was the worst too, awful.
He is so underrated as the Doctor. I would put him in the top three, with Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker.
Agreed with those choices. With Jon Pertwee being fourth.
I'm just starting a SM run and am currently on Paradise Towers.
Although the early stories are rather pantomime there is not a single one is actually dislike (there are actually few classics I dislike)
I have actually been noting little touches to his acting that I think are pretty good. An example is when he is doing the "how you do" with the kangs and the Doctor is visibly nervous, its done very well (IMO).
I wish he had got hisnext (last IIRC) season. 26 was a strong season and Im slightly bitter still it got the can.
I think McCoy should be judged on the tv stories and the Big Finish audios. Like the 6th doctor I felt the 7th improved in the audios (though he did improve in the later tv stories as well). Very underrated Doctor. As for the any old duffer with a equity card comment I feel that is very harsh, plus it is not true because not everyone is in the Hobbit or a movie of similar quality.
Yeah, I think the early comedic bits were meant to make the most of his comic background, and probably to provide a distinct counterpoint to his predecessor. I think we can probably all agree he hit his peak when he was able to go darker, and show a little more depth than 'eccentric'.
Some of McCoy's stories are amongst my all-time favourite.
The Curse of Fenric, Remembrance of the Daleks and Survival are some of the best Doctor Who stories out there (even if Survival did look a it was made on a pitiful budget- which it was).
Season 24 on the other hand was Doctor Who at its absolute lowest point...but I'll always maintain that starting with season 25, despite the pathetic budget, the production team got their act together and started putting their heart and soul back into the programme again after the turbulent Colin Baker years where there appeared to be problems at every corner.
I know a lot of people think he was not good enough as an actor but he was given the part when the show's days were clearly numbered. They could have cast anybody in 1987 and it wouldn't have mattered - the BBC hated the show, wouldn't spend money on it, most people in TV thought it was a career killer to be involved in, and the scheduling was deliberately designed to kill the ratings.
Personally, I preferred him to Colin Baker as the Doctor and I think his performances in Season 26 at the very least gave Peter Davison's Doctor a run for his money.
Some of the other Doctors could be cringeworthy too. I can't bear to watch Pertwee do his Venusian Karate anymore, and Tom Baker's clowning under Graham Williams has always got on my nerves.
McCoy seems to be singled out for particular criticism but at least it took some of the slack off Colin Baker, who would probably be getting the criticism instead.
Comments
Not good at the anger scenes IMO.
'Battlefield' is a good example.
Anyway, I'd put him in the bottom 3.

Oof, that's harsh.
Not my fave, but towards the end he got very interesting, and secretive and conniving seemed to suit McCoy's acting style too.
... sorry about this ...
The Real McCoy.
As a Doctor he is easily my least favourite but I have met him at conventions and signings and he is a lovely bloke.

Some of it, not all of it.
