Radio News Headlines

1. Sunrise Radio Group chairman has denied that its network of stations are facing closure despite the company owing over £400,000 to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). This excludes other amounts of debts that are owed to numerous creditors. More.

2. The end is near for analogue radio... radio gets very high. Like all technologies, AM radio had advantages and some problems. Today we have a brief look at the 1930s technology we still use today: Frequency Modulation on the Very High Frequency band. More.

3. A whole new tier of small-scale radio stations could be launched on DAB digital radio, new research from Ofcom suggests. The regulator tested an experimental DAB multiplex in Brighton between September 2012 and January 2013, using new lower-cost technologies including a variety of open-source software, which concluded that “it is feasible to deliver DAB in small areas at much lower cost than currently required for equipment to deliver wide-area coverage.” More

T.V. Newsie Bits Headlines
1. Freesat, the subscription-free satellite TV service, has announced the addition of two new channels to its offering as of 27th August. More.

2. Satellite operator Intelsat is teaming up with BT Media and Broadcast, Ericsson, Sony and Newtec to transmit the Saracens vs. Gloucester rugby union match live from London in 4K Ultra-HD to the RAI Convention Centre at IBC 2013. More.

3. LG has confirmed the availability of its Curved OLED TV in Germany, becoming the first TV maker to bring advanced OLED TV technology to European customers. The OLED TV will be sold at select retailers across the country starting this week and will roll out in other European markets in the fourth quarter. More.

4. One in four homes will own a satellite dish by 2018, according to a new report from Digital TV Research. Covering 97 countries, the number of pay satellite TV (DBS or DTH) homes will reach 251 million by 2018, up from 178 million at end-2012 and 103 million at end-2008. More.

5. In the UK 98.5% of all TV viewing is on a traditional TV set and just 1.5% is on other screens such as tablets, according to Thinkbox research. Total average daily TV viewing in the UK during January-June 2013 was 4 hours, 1 minute a day per person. This comprised: three hours, 58 minutes a day of linear TV on a TV set. This is three minutes a day less than the same period last year (source: Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board [BARB]). One reason for the slight drop is the improving economy. More.

6. TalkTalk has announced it has signed its 500,000th TV customer, 11 months after adopting the PSB-telco broadband service YouView as its prime source of TV entertainment. It is a far cry from the 50,000 households that took the Tiscali TV service, formed from the old HomeChoice business, and run as TalkTalk TV. More.

7. “Studios are now in a position to go direct-to-consumer with Over-the-Top services. HBO is well placed to seed the UK market,” according to Guy Bisson, director of TV at IHS Electronics & Media. The Hollywood studios could dismantle the UK premium movie channel market by setting up their own direct-to-consumer Over-The-Top (OTT) television proposition. With as few as 1.35 million subscribers, such a service would cut out the middlemen represented by today’s pay TV providers and existing OTT services, such as Netflix. More.

8. Still hurting after having to close its 3D channel, sports broadcasting giant ESPN say it has no plans to produce a separate Ultra-HD channel. CTO Chuck Pagano says that neither DirecTV or Dish have asked ESPN to provide an Ultra-HD feed. More.

9. Early 4K tests from the EBU show that viewers appreciate higher frame rates much more than increased resolution. The tests, designed to gauge the impact of higher frame rates on the viewing experience, are taking place this week at IRT's facilities in Munich by the EBU's Broadcast Technology Futures (BTF) group, which is made up of the heads of the research labs of the BBC, IRT, RAI and NHK. Ultra HD provides four times the resolution of today’s HD TV, providing more dramatic action for sporting events and a more compelling experience for premium movies and documentaries. Using the latest satellite solutions for Ultra HD creates exciting new opportunities for both broadcasters and industry partners. More

TV panel makers are betting on a high rate of growth for UltraHD (4K) LCD TVs during the next four years. These companies expect to ship nearly 943,000 UHD LCD panels this year, up from less than 33,000 units in 2012, according to the Display Materials & Systems Service at information and analytics provider IHS. The next two years will see shipments ramp up even more quickly to 7.1 million units in 2015, on their way to reaching 20.8 million units by 2017. The total rises much higher when including a type of lower-priced, lower-specification product called UHD Ready, panels, which mainly are targeted at the Chinese market. Suppliers collectively plan to ship as many as 4 million UHD Ready panels this year alone. More

SES has pioneered the first Ultra HD transmission in the new HEVC standard from an Astra satellite at 19.2 degrees East. Working with its partners Harmonic and Broadcom Corporation, it presented an end-to-end demonstration at the SES Industry Days in Luxembourg using Harmonic’s ProMedia Xpress and a HEVC decoder reference-design system based on Broadcom’s BCM7445 device for receiving HEVC encoded Ultra-HD television transmission. Dolby Laboratories and Royal Philips Electronics in association with CAMERON | PACE Group (CPG) announced at NAB in Las Vegas that they have signed an agreement to integrate the Dolby 3D format into CPG’s 3D video content production workflow and to collaborate on the use of the Dolby 3D format. All parties believe that glasses-free 3D presentation in the home can be improved by delivering premium-quality autostereoscopic 3D content using the Dolby 3D format. Dolby is showcasing CPG’s 3D content in its NAB Show booth as part of its demonstration of Dolby 3D technology from post-production through distribution to playback. More

MIPTV 2013 – Cannes. With Sony screens across the Palais and two conference sessions, there was no escaping 4K UltraHD. SES jumped at the opportunity to announce the launch of its SES Ultra HD Experience initiative, which invites content providers and broadcasters to work with SES to support the development of the Ultra HD value chain. “You’re not alone. We are here today to say to you: let’s work together,” said Norbert Hoelzle, SVP, commercial Europe, SES, during Wedensday’s 4K session. “Let’s be the catalyst for industry and get the Ultra HD train rolling. The same way we HD started ten years ago, in an industry-wide effort, let’s start Ultra HD today.” More * * *

The BBC has told London’s ‘Future TV’ summit that viewers are less and less enthusiastic about watching programming in 3D. The BBC’s technology guru Andy Quested, said the BBC had been an excited supporter of 3D broadcasting but that each time a new 3D show was televised, the audience ‘spike’ got lower. Quested’s comments come at the end of a two-year test of 3D at the BBC and include top-rated output such as the BBC’s flagship Strictly Come Dancing, natural history blockbuster Walking with Dinosaurs and comedy show Mr Stink, as well as last year’s London Olympic Games which transmitted dozens of events in 3D. The news is all the more disappointing given that the potential audience for 3D in the UK has expanded considerably, to around 1.5 million homes, over the past two years. More

Broadcasters have further work to complete on Ultra High Definition Television before it can enter the broadcast mainstream, according to the EBU’s head of media fundamentals & production. Speaking at the SMPTE Annual Technical Conference in Hollywood Hans Hoffmann said the interfaces needed for programme production and for connections in domestic equipment both needed attention. The new family of compression technologies, HEVC will be published shortly, but much testing remains to be done. More.

Arise News now has just over a week to either get back on air or loose their EPG slots. The website is still being updated and online programmes are still being made in the US studios so someone's still getting paid (even if the distributor isn't!).

I assume if they then returned to air later than the 30 day period Sky would add their two services back at the end of the news overspill section (i.e. 573 and 574)?

You must be thinking of something else as Film4 HD won't be on Freesat.

The agreement between C4 and Sky was made last year. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tech/news/a405936/channel-4s-4od-to-launch-on-sky-along-with-film4-hd-and-more4-hd.html

Definitely removed this morning, and it's currently still on air (showing the "programmes start at 21.00") off the EPG on 11.222 H, 27.500, 2/3.

    UPDATE

    Confirmation that

    11.680 V

    51122: Setanta Ireland pub version
51123: Setanta Sports 1 Ireland Pub version

    EPG data added today

The channel itself is the same as it points to same PIDs in both cases so there will be no separate ads.

Entertainment Extra+ to get Film4 HD.
Had to be as Sky have helped with start up and no way was they going to outlay that kind of cash and then let Freesat have it too!

Sky helped with start-up? Apart from all that time it's been on Virgin for last 2 years?

Bit of a bad deal for Sky customers, it's in the basic package for Virgin customers

Sounds like conjecture to me. They're probably paying for the transponder space but that's all we know.
