I can't see it working either. Not unless they practically re-write the entire story and just keep the characters and title. That way they could perhaps make it a little more cinema friendly and a little less embarrassing for women (and some men) to go and see it. Either that or just go straight to bluray.
From everyone's reaction, I can see why the likes of Emma Watson would steer clear! Not only is the material possibly career ending, but the risk of it would deter many! Will confidently say neither role has been cast with their first choice...probably about choice 34
I didn't think i'd like the books but once you got past the repetitive sex scenes the story wasn't to bad. I'd have watched the film if they'd managed to cast Robert Pattinson as Christian Grey.
The two leads were never going to be big names. Having said that, I always agreed with the suggestions that Matt Bomer would've made the ideal Christian Grey and was hoping he'd be cast...um, not that I was ever planning to watch the film!
Either it has loads of explicit sex in it - in which case it will get a NC17 rating in the USA, which is a kiss of death or they cut out all the sex and you are left a terrible S&M "romance" that is punctuated with dialogue that would make George Lucas wince (he's famous for his bad dialogue, non-sci fi fans).
Getting two big names in it and then getting them naked would probably have given it curiosity value, but other than that, what does this film offer?
I think stuff like 9 1/2 weeks and Last Tango in Paris would not get made today - studio's are far to affraid of middle America's sensibilities - so 50 Shades must have no chance of hitting the screen unaltered.
While people might have bought a copy of the book to read at home - sitting in the cinema with their neighbours? Not going to happen.
Maybe there will be an explicit directors cut DVD?
I have no issue with the casting at all, both seem like decent actors but both of them and the scriptwriter are going to have their work cut out considering how poor the source material.
I'm more surprised that people actually thought the likes of Matt Bomer/Ryan Gosling/Ian Somerhalder were going to be a part of this. I can appreciate fantasy casting but realistically I think those three (and others) probably know it's not a wise career move and have better options lined up.
I agree with those who reckon the movie will bomb though.

No major star wanted to touch this film
They know it's going to be embarrassing trash, just like the book.
Crappy book needs a crappy actor and she's proved this already with Twilight.
She's a good actress. Her wider body of work proves that
As for Twilight, she did what she was asked to do.
She played an emotionaless, anti-social, bland girl, because that's what Bella is in the books.
He IS Christian Grey in my eyes.

50 Shades started life as Twilight fan fiction.

Matt Bomer is also gay so it would be Christian Gay:D
Who was in the running?
I'm glad it's two relatively unknowns but its going to kill their career .
The woman who plays Ana looks more like the dominate then Charlie
She did not say but she wanted R Patz as Christian which makes sense as she was a massive Twlight fan and the book was based on that originally .
