You can't really top Robocop in terms of sheer psychotic violent fun. I'm actually interested in how this turns out because of the cast and that it's a different if probably generic direction.
The 1980's was a great time for raw violent cinema with improved SFX on that of the 1970's. Robocop, Predator (well most Arnie movies!), Die Hard, Cobra (below average but you get the idea). Even a little more family intended cop movies like Beverly Hills Cop and Lethal Weapon are cooler than todays boring leading action actors and CGI fests. Maybe I'm being overly nostalgic, but I can certainly see the change since the mid 90's.
No, you're not overly nostalgic. A lot of us have the same feelings.
Does it really sound that awful? What about it puts you off? Baring in mind that this is an account by someone who rushed to watch it privately as he was working at the time it was delivered to him.
A lot of people aren't seemingly willing to give this movie a chance because it's a PG-13 (either 12 or 15 in the UK) and I can't understand why? That doesn't mean it's going to be bad. People rave about the Nolan Batman films, all 3 of them are PG-13/12 they have violence but not gore, a bit of language and some great plots and acting. If the character of Batman was replaced by RoboCop and everything else was the same, would people still rave about those movies?
Not for me, Judge Dredd meets Iron Man. Looks like Murphy has too much of a human aspect in this, Robocop is more machine than man.
Watched the trailer last night and it's exactly as the guy described it. And I'm unimpressed.
That visor coming down when he's angry is very Bumblebee. And it felt a bit Power Rangers-y.
I know this is going to sound odd, but, the original was more realistic. Even Robo himself was more believable than what I saw in that trailer. It had grit and dark humour. This looks like a CGI kiddy bore-fest. Not that I'm beyond that kind of film, I've quite enjoyed the Marvel movies on the whole and my nostalgia keeps the Transformers close without getting fanboyish.
I can't see the acting talent available saving this film.
As Blitz says, Robo was more machine than man. He was 'product' and an experiment. But he's off trying to be a good dad.
I'll give it a watch when it comes on Sky. Defo not paying to see it.

.
spot on. It may turn out to be okay film in it's own right, but it ain't Robocop as we know it.
Just going to bump this thread. A separate thread has been made - maybe a mod could merge, as it would be a shame if this 7 page thread is lost to the new one...
Anyone know why in some stills he looks like a knock off of the original (i.e. silver) and in others he's matt black (and looks like a poor mans Batman instead)?
Have they been reshooting after the initial "meh" that the suit reveal generated?

In the trailer, he starts off in the silver then cuts to Keaton, who is looking at two designs and says "Let's go with black."
I said in the other thread it was a bit Power Rangers-y but at second look it's got a hint of Tron about it too.

Looked to me like they start off with something like the original, then change the the Batman/Iron Man love-child suit.
I'm still willing to give the film a shot, but the trailer's not too impressive tbh.
edit: The release date is February? I thought they pushed it back to next summer?
I must say the black suit looked impressive and i can now forgive it being present. I did think the human vs machine idea has been overused as a story theme and i can view him being hunted or reset by the end of the film. Overall it was promising but the hard hitting brutality, harsh times setting was misisng for me.
Perhaps the mods will merge and just call the thread "RoboCop (2014)" please.
He starts off as silver, then gets changed to black by OCP and towards the end of the film for one reason or another he is back as a different form of silver than the original one.
After seeing that, any benefit of the doubt is now well and truly out of the f****** window for me. Pathetic, sure it looks great but that's it. Why don't they ever cast people who can act anymore???? FFS the point of the character in any medium (film, comic etc) is a hope of him regaining lost humanity. A car bomb? Really? It looks like something that will end up on the True Movies or Sci-Fi channel in a couple of years. Oh we've snagged Gary Oldman, oh well the suit also has to be black now of course...you know look like a f****** Dyson Hoover aswell. Lol I can't believe how much a damn film is annoying me already!
watched trailer again just to make sure and can confirm it looks like total garbage. The suit reminds me of something out of GI Joe movie, get ready for shots of Robo jumping, summersaulting etc.
I can't see any of the good stuff from the original remaining in this version. This is RoboCop for the modern teen generation - OTT action, explosions, whizz bang camera effects and absolutely no threat or dread whatsoever.

Luckily, (or hopefully) you don't have access to a Cobra?
Miguel Ferrer has done very little acting since Robocop. I think he has a career as a motivational speaker. I know he was in the short lived Bionic Woman as Michelle Ryan's boss, but even that was a good few years ago now. On that basis, although it's not impossible, I'd be surprised to see him participate in a film which is only going to dirty the memory of a cult classic that he had a major part in.
Um.. No. He's done mostly television. The whole run of Crossing Jordan and is a regular on NCIS LA.
I watched Dredd last night and whatever you think of the film or comparing it to the new Robocop I think it does indicate that you need violence and a bit of gore in these types of films. It's an 18 for a reason and don't think it would have worked at all being a kids film.
But that's not the point.
Dredd (2012) is a better film than Dredd (1996), far superior in almost every way. It made $36m worldwide with an 18/R rating.
Total Recall (2012) is a worse film than Total Recall (1990), despite being closer to the original story, it is soul-less and lacks any humour. It made $198m worldwide with a 12A/PG13
Being "good" as a movie doesn't matter. Making money does. And hte problem is that today, a "Hard R" doesn't sell.

Anyway, the trailer has been released online now.
But the original had that. Even though they wiped his memory his humanity broke through and he went after Clarence & co.
I'll be skipping the cinema visit and waiting for Sky.

We'll see. But that's an underwhelming trailer.

Not me:D though I hope Paul Verhoeven does after he sees that crap.
