Rylan was great fun short term, but has destroyed the show's credibility long term

Have to admit that one of my guilty pleasures last year was watching Rylan's performances on x-factor. The show has always catered to those who enjoy some light comic relief and Rylan filled that slot well. The problem was, the public didn't take to him immediately in the way they did Wagner or Jedward. That first week with Carolynne he was bottom 2, she was incredibly talented and he could barely carry a note. In the interest of keeping the comic relief, they sent her packing, to preserve the short term interests of the show - to keep it fun that series.
However, Rylan has made a mockery of the show and process and made people aware how engineered the show is - and always has been. Rylan's new career as a tv presenter shows he had zero interest in music and was just using the show as a platform to get famous, further mocking the little integrity x-factor now has. With declining ratings, I wonder if the 'rylan effect' has meant people are less likely to commit to the show this year.

Wondering who the Joke act will be this year... ??
Rylan is without doubt the worst act ever put thru to the lives.. worse than Jedwards and the looney bloke forgot his name the druggie fella with wild hair..?
I wouldn't disagree with this - ironically, that's the worst thing that could have happened for x-factor. Keeping him in the public view is a constant reminder to the public what a joke the x factor has become - especially when real talent like Carolynne and Ella Henderson went before him.
Rylan has left an unfortunate smear on the x-factor franchise for a lot of viewers.
The fact that he was put through at the expense of far better singers just made a mockery of the whole show. I would not think they will make the same mistake this year.
But I do think many viewers switched off
I stopped watching series six after John & Edward beat Lucie.
I stopped watching series seven after Katie beat Treyc.
I stopped watching series nine after Rylan beat Carolynne.
Any stupid decisions will make me switch off. If the show is just going to chase after headlines, thinking it will boost ratings, then I certainly won't help them with that, and I'll do the exact opposite of what they want the viewers to do.
The X Factor format is so good, it really doesn't need acts like Rylan to help it. The Voice is all about talent, yet it doesn't interest me at all because the format is absolute rubbish. If The X Factor focused on a good, talented cast for the live shows, nothing can beat it.
XF's credibility as a format was destroyed by Simon Cowell, the moment when he had it in his hands to send home Jedward after weeks of criticising them mercilessly, but instead, he sent it to deadlock, thus meaning they survived to create more headlines for his show.
If XF was really about singing, he should have sent them home when he had the chance.
If Simon Cowell doesn't take XF seriously, why on Earth should Rylan or any of the others?
I say good luck to Rylan & all of them, if they can make money out of XF, even if music isn't their first love.
I think Rylan was an 'Only Way Is Essex' type fame hungry wannabe. He saw the X Factor as a great means of getting on telly and making a name for himself. As the OP said, he had absolutely ZERO genuine interest in making music. That ridiculous reaction to him getting through at judges houses was him just acting up to the cameras - it got him in the papers and was the catalyst. As soon as he inevitably got voted out in the end, he was straight on Big Brother to further his 15 minutes of fame. He knew if he kept himself in the limelight some idiots like Channel 4 would give him a TV gig. So job done, some might respect him for it but I don't, it's desperately shallow to seek fame and TV to such an extent.
You can argue Wagner & Jedward were just as bad joke acts, but Rylan is truely unique is the way it was all planned out. It's so pathetic.

Also viewing numbers seem to be up so far as well from last year, so it be that much of a big deal to most people. I'm personally keeping the mentality that if anything happens that's ridiculous, I'll deal with it at that point. Until then I don't see why I should let past series' bs distract my enjoyment of this series so far. So I'm not really seeing the show as smeared to be honest.
Spot on.
I don't know how anyone can lay the blame for the lack of credibility in XF at Rylan's door.
XF lost it's credibility long before Rylan ever pitched up on the show.
Simon Cowell is the one responsible for the lack of credibility & nobody else.
1) X Factor is first and foremost TV then a singing show.
2) Cowell does actually care considering that he signs the winner onto his label and any others he considers potential money makers. That year (as much as I loved Lucie) he clearly didn't think Lucie could win/was a potentially good artist so he thought she was expendable in exchange for some more headlines.
I really hope we get an act like Jedward or Wagner or Rylan or even Christopher Maloney this series. The show needs them, otherwise its just boring for me.
The only reason I watch X Factor and not the Voice is because The Voice doesn't have these acts. I find it boring and I don't care for acts who are fantastic or good.
Its not the point of the show for me anyway.
No one could be worse than Jedward.
