Have I just been robbed?

A small shop near us has just charged me a quid for one onion! Yes, one onion, but a big one. I forgot them in Asda and wife wants to cook stew tonight. I queried it as he didn't weigh it or anything, just said "£1 please" but he said I could take it or leave it.

No you haven't. He asked for the money and you willingly handed it over.

Hmmm. Seems a bit steep. Was it a pound shop?

Onions are roughly £1 a kilo. Was yours a monster?

No, just a corner sweet shop/off-licence which has a few fruit and veg outside. No, a big onion but not a monster by any means.

No, robberies tend not to give you the option.

Presume it was a Spanish Onion, so give some though to the poor Spanish Farmer who had to prepare the land, plant the seeds, grow the crop, harvest the crop, transport it and get a half decent price to feed himself, his wife and seven children, then for whoever he sold it to, to arrange transport from Spain all the way to the UK, sell them at a Market here, then transport same Onion from Market to corner shop, in a word you have been DONE!!:D:D

corner shops have always been FAR more expensive than a supermarket, they probably charge the extortionate price for people like you who forget something and want to quickly get it from their local shop.

    Its extortion, but not theft.

If they took your money without your permission then its a robbery but assuming you presented the onion you wanted to the cashier they said "one pound please" and you handed over the money then its your own fault i'm afraid

Either they've robbed you or they're seriously overcharging with things. Shopkeepers round here wouldn't be able to sell them if they started charging £1 for loose onions. That's an absolutely ridiculous price.

I knew what you meant. Daylight robbery. We use this term when people who sell things charge way too much than what the item should have been priced at.
