I am rather worried to find a letter through my door saying we are being investigated for not having a TV licence when I recall very clearly paying it in full this time last year. Unfortunately I cannot find the slip with the receipt on it and I'm getting rather worried now because we may get into trouble despite having paid but not being able to prove it the frustrating thing is I can find reciept slips going back to 1999. Just so stressed now as my mum has been seriously ill for a lot of the year and don't need this hassle tbh.
Would really appreciate any advice, thank you.

Do bear in mind these letters from TVL are computer generated and fired off willy-nilly to people who do not appear on their database. They are worded to frighten people into paying.
In the meantime, if TVL send someone round, do not enter into any conversation with them and simply close the door. On no circumstances let them into your house.
Also do bear in mind the offence is to watch TV as it is broadcast without a licence. You do not need a TV licence to simply own a TV - indeed you can own one and watch DVDs on it without needing a licence.
Or are the letters addressed to you personally i.e. does it look like they're now chasing you up for not renewing?
I've just found the reciept slip phew should I still not answer the door if they appear?
And thank you all for your replies very kind.
If you go to the TVL website, you can check if you need to renew the licence. You'll need to know the licence number, which may be on the letter you have received.

the threats go out automatically and are deliberately quite nasty. the bbc didnt invent this particular enforcement system but are now being forced to pay for it.
For instance, I paid mine last week, and it said that it's valid until 31 August 2014. Naturally, the payment would also include the September that we have just been through where I didn't have the money to pay for it at that time.
Unacceptable IMO but that's the way it is. Always buy at the beginning of a month if moving house etc.
Anyway have spoken to them and they've confirmed it was a mistake and confirmed we do have a valid license.
What a load of misinformed rubbish.
What insurance?
All the insurance policies I have run from an exact time on an exact day for exactly a year. (Unless there have been mid-term alterations, obviously.)
What policies do you have that can only start on the 1st of a month?
However, that would appear to be beneath you...
No, insurance depends on who's providing it (TV Licence and Road Tax are obviously government taxes). Car insurance has always run exactly a year for me.
You shouldn't need to buy a new license if moving house. You can change the address that your existing license covers.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ROAD TAX!
You seem upset.
