not always in the music industry tbh , not all record companies are as blatantly commercial as syco
I know, I was just being funny... or trying. But if an artist makes an abject loss they aren't in great standing (although even then they will work on them sometimes).

I'm curious; name one and why aren't they?
There may be good solid reasons I accept, like they are not expressly for profit, or they are being run for non commercial reasons by a rich patron, but I fail to see what's wrong with being "commercial".
There are butchers bakers and candlestick makers out there doing things "commercially" making an honest living but nobody seems to attach an implied stigma to it.

are you seriously asking that question
its like the difference between macdonalds and a Michelin star restaurant , both are in it to make money but they look at different ways of doing it
Simon, the reason is, there are other people taking part in this show who are frankly much better: Rough Copy, Luke and Sam Bailey. People will be voting for them so get over it. If you want a create a 'star' form a show with one contestant only. Sheena Easton was made famous that way on 'The Big Time'.
Jedward have turned into mythical legends though. Lucie hasn't.
Lucie Jones is doing quite well for herself. She may not be a recording artist but she has plenty of stage work being thrown her way on top of a modelling contract or 2.
Jedward, however, are still making lame efforts to be taken more seriously, they no longer have a recording contract and are taking just about any scratchy role that comes their way.

Good analogy. Though not everyone can be a Michelin restaurant or indeed want to be, nor would it be sustainable if all eateries were. Sometimes you want cheesy beans not foie gras. Horses for courses (if you excuse the pun !) so to speak, but the greasy spoon cafe still has a right to make a living as much as Raymond Blanc or Heston Blumenthal or whoever.

not saying they don't , and sometimes I will happily grab some fast food myself
my point was we should not mistake the approval of someone like simon cowell as a sign of quality when it comes to music

No agreed indeed. He does however have a reasonable knack of picking contestants who will succeed ( not 100% - see Same Difference - but not bad ) despite apparent disdain from the XFactor voters, who don't have a perfect record at all.
Personally the more I see of her the more I think he's right about Tamera being a star ( or " commercial " I suppose in this case ), but doesn't of course mean that is an automatic endorsement of " quality ", which is in the eye of the beholder.

Except he makes these said contestants sell millions. People buy these records - I don't think those millions of people lack good music taste. It's 'pop' music for a reason.;)
No-one is stopping Cowell from trying to create his own personal star to groom to his own specifications. He's got the means - and I'm sure he'll do just that but Tamera is only a cypher and is not her own person. Just don't expect the whole of the British public to agree with his ideas. He loves talking dogs for godsake.

Well he knows what he is talking about - he did bring us Mr Blobby and Robson and Jerome.
yep , so whoever wins this year will be in good company
To be fair to him, that is generally how businesses work.
Although I am not a fan of Tamera by any stretch of the imagination, it was the wrong result and I did feel bad for her.

that's not right tho
he knows what might make him money , whether they are good or not is irrelevant to him
unless you consider one direction et al "good" of course

But more than likely it will the following weekend.
If anyone was in any doubt on what this show is about, then that should cover it.
STAR: Someone who sells a few records to the youth market, before the youth market moves on and the 'Star' becomes a 'Who?'.
Not into 1Direction at all, but they have done well even though i hate saying so.
I'm hoping this a nod to Mean Girls...
It is I'm not that big a bitch now
SHE DOESN'T EVEN GO HERE.

Dermot on stage: "Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Gary Barlow.”
Sam to Louis: "That's why Thompsons hair is so big, it's full of secrets,"

I'd rather be in Lucie's shoes.
