I think Best Actress will be either Cate Blanchett or Emma Thompson, but I'd really like Amy Adams to win.
BIB, I agree.
Adams reportedly does a not great attempt at an English accent in American Hustle, which presumably won't help.
The New York Film Critics Circle winners-
Best Picture: American Hustle
Best Director: Steve McQueen - 12 Years A Slave
Best Actor: Robert Redford - All is Lost
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine
Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto - Dallas Buyers Club
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence - American Hustle
Best Foreign Language: Blue is the Warmest Colour
Best Screenplay: American Hustle
Best Animated: The Wind Rises
Best Cinematography: Bruno Delbonnel - Inside Llewyn Davis
Best First Film: Fruitvale Station
Best Documentary: Stories We Tell
Apparently very close between 12 Years and American Hustle for picture.
Interestingly they've said Wolf of Wall Street was nowhere in any category.
^
Fruitvale Station?! I didn't think it'd get any attention. Nice one! Robert Redford? Surprising, but I still think it's a pity nom. Or a pity win in this case.
Jennifer Lawrence, though? Boring. I didn't see Jared Leto coming at all. Good. While I generally see him as a ********, I do think he's underrated as an actor.
Interestingly they've said Wolf of Wall Street was nowhere in any category.
I'm not surprised. While well-liked, some say Wolf of Wall Street seems an extended version of The Great Gatsby via DiCaprio, hyperactive vibe and extravagant production values. So it pales in comparison with American Hustle and Dallas Buyers Club. A case of bad timing, basically. Who knows, it may have a better chance with US Academy Awards.
Lovely to see Jennifer still having that momentum. For a woman of her age, she takes on roles you would normally see a woman in her 30's take. She takes on roles that are years beyond her, but she excels.
She reminds me of a young american Kate Winslet. Not in her acting style but with her choices of roles.
If there is any justice cate blanchett should win for blue jasmine. An absolutely incredible performance.
Would also like to see colin farrell nominated for saving mr banks.
Surprised Jennifer Lawrence won, I didn't think anyone would award her this year after her success last year. She must be really good in American Hustle! I expect the Globes, Oscars etc. won't go her way though, the NYFCC aren't often a great indicator of awards season proper - they gave Best Actress to Rachel Weisz last year and she didn't even get nominated anywhere else.
I think they're likely to be right about McQueen and Blanchett though.

Regardless of success last year, it isn't a legitimate reason why it should be a suprise of her being nominated.
Actually Weisz did get nominated at the golden globes in terms of other award shows.

I didn't say it was a surprise her being nominated, I said I was surprised she won (was awarded) - there's a difference.
I forgot about the Globes, though in a way they're slightly artificial given there are two acting categories. I think it's more telling that Weisz didn't get a SAG nomination, and was never really in the frame for an Oscar nom either. Though of course the NYFCC don't always differ that much from the Academy or SAG.
Cate Blanchett is pretty much the front runner for best actress
It's funny to think that I'd long presumed that Naomi Watts would get it, from the moment she was cast as Diana, but that film turned out to be such a flop!
This might sound crass and cynical tk think but I wonder what Idis Elba's chances are for best actor now that Mandela has died.
No. Not really. That's kind of the way the Academy works. Though i still think they won't miss a chance to give Robert Redford another Oscar. Remember, he doesn't have one for acting.

That film has had no oscar buzz since the very start of the oscar talk. Playing Nelson Mandela is such great oscar bait, but the film hasn't had any buzz or talk of it being nominated for anything. It's box office success will more than likely increase due to Mandela's death though
and i agree with the poster a few posts above, i immediatley thought it would Naomi Watts as the huge contender for the oscar for Diana, plus Nicole Kidman for Grace Kelly but that has been delayed and is more likely a contender for the 2015 oscars.

None really, it's a very tough category this year. I'd guess the noms will go to-
Bruce Dern - Nebraska
Chiwetel Ejiofor - 12 Years a Slave
Tom Hanks - Captain Phillips
Leonardo DiCaprio- The Wolf of Wall Street
Robert Redford - All is Lost
Interesting to see if they really do give it to Redford over Ejiofor, because that will cause a fuss.

I really do think they will give it to Redford. I didn't think he would win until he did a couple of days ago. I guess they realised he's nearer to death's door than they expected after seeing All is Lost. "Oh, man. He looks so old. Let's give him an Oscar, as a thank-you for giving great performances all these years, before he'd keel over. Yeah, it would make us feel real good in knowing that we've made an old guy happy."
People's memory can be notoriously short, so I think they will forget Ejiofor with time whereas they won't with Redford.
Matthew M is a huge contender for Dallas Buyer Clubs. I haven't heard any fuss or buzz on Leo for The Wolf of wool street.
For various reasons, I didn't think much of 12 Years a Slave, but Ejiofor really did give a decent performance in the film. So yes, he deserves to be nominated.

I respect your opinion. I just feel with so many talented black actors out there, he was a poor choice for the role. It lacked any ability, any rawness or any honest about it.
The only hype I had heard about for a long time was Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club, so I'm expecting him to be nominated, if not win.
It's an Oscar-bait role on an Anne Hathaway-in-Les-Mis scale, but I'm not sure what the buzz is now - he was more talked up before any of the films had been seen.
I expect he'll get a nomination though, and wouldn't be surprised to see Di Caprio miss out.
The only acting category that seems to be in any way certain at the minute is Best Actress, which I'll be shocked if Cate Blanchett doesn't win.

With that, you just know I cannot resist asking! Who do you think would have been a good choice for the role?
FWIW, when I heard about 12 Years a Slave, I thought the role would go to Ejiofor, Jeffrey Wright, David Oyelowo or Omar Sy (or at least until I found out that while he understands English, he could only speak French ). I was quite happy when it went to Ejiofor because I was relieved it didn't go to Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Mackie or Idris Elba as rumoured at the time.

Whoa. New emoticons! :kitty: <-- this doesn't look like a kitty. It's a dog, isn't it?

Is it me or are almost all those films very recent? As in the last couple of months? Have those critics completely forgotten about films released earlier in the year? Do they really have such short memories?

I liked the idea of there being the battle of the two beloved princesses!
Is it me or are almost all those films very recent? As in the last couple of months? Have those critics completely forgotten about films released earlier in the year? Do they really have such short memories?
Yes, they are recent, but no, it's not really to do with the critics having short memories, it's just logical. Most of the films that are in any way contenders for the Oscars don't premiere until the Toronto Film Festival in November at the earliest, as it would be pointless to release any earlier because whatever's most recent is always freshest in the mind.
Blue is the Warmest Colour and Inside Llewyn Davis were showing at Cannes anyway, even though they were only on general release recently (or not even yet in the case of the latter).

It's typical that films viewed by the studios as awards contenders aren't released until the autumn these days, hence why most of the films that are shortlisted come out later in the year. There are exceptions to this - Silence of the Lambs is the most obvious, as it came out in Feb 1991 and still won Best Picture - but there aren't many exceptions to the rule, and when it does happen it tends to be more the studio underestimate or misjudge how well a film will be released. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was deemed by WB as being a big film for awards season in 2011, but it landed on it's arse, for example!

I think the hype may have to do with his drastic weight loss.
He's a decent actor (only when he feels like doing his job), but I think people were taken aback when he lost weight that much for his role in DBC.
Is it me or are almost all those films very recent? As in the last couple of months? Have those critics completely forgotten about films released earlier in the year? Do they really have such short memories?
