Who for you is the best.

Can be current or from the past and also what song of their give you goosebumps.

For me for the sheer emotion is has to be Judy Garland singing "The Man that got away" from a "Star is Born". The sheer emotion is stunning and never fails to move me.

I am not that old, but so the film a few years ago and when I heard that song and the way Judy sings it. No current artist could ever compete with that!!

Debbie Harry. Can sing pretty much any style.

Fade Away and Radiate is a real classic.

Sandy Denny - for purity of tone, range(including emotional range), exquisite diction and phrasing, etc. The Banks Of The Nile is one of her best IMO - the vocal inflections in particular are a thing of beauty.

Celine Dion. Her live performances of Think Twice and Le Blues Du Businessman are my favourites. Vocal masterclasses.

I came on here to post Sandy - quite simply the most beautiful voice I've ever heard - no need for the '10 notes where one will do' vocal histrionics, and to write a song like 'Who knows where the time goes' at 20 years of age is amazing.

Someone's going to say "Cheryl Cole", aren't they?

For the record, I like Ann Wilson too, she's got a belter of a voice.

I'd also add Valerie Cowell (Bad Influence) in there too.

I do like Tarja Turunen as well.

Sound awful, but I have never heard of her.

Will amend them by going to see what I can download.

I am even more impressed by her rendition of Ol Man River, it packs a knockout punch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv_Ryrj6x4g

I think it's quite well known on these forums that my all time favourite singer was Deanna Durbin, and I don't think there can be any argument that she was one of the finest lyric soprano voices ever heard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hju5YFPH_eA

But that's not what you asked.

So in answer to your question I think very much depends on how you define best...

For me technically the best ever from any genre would probably be: Renata Tebaldi just listen and weep! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g_uZclLWwk Absolutely incredible.

From "pop" I would say that Connie Francis is for me as good as it gets http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNORXwnf-AU I don't think there has ever been a more versatile singer, nor one who has had hits in so many languages.

Another candidate from me would be Judith Durham of the seekers... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpjf_t5tU9w I don't think anyone who lived through the 60s could possibly forget her soaring vocals.

My current favourite from across all genre is Anna Netrebko http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rigFkhoqZmo though she seems to very much divide opinion among opera fans. In my opinion she has now more than proven her place at the very top...

I'm leaving it for someone else to suggest Ella Fitzgerald as I don't want to be greedy... :D

For me that is the beauty of threads like this, people will often suggest singers you'd never have considered...

OK that can be a mixed blessing :D but every now and then it's worth a quick search.

To me, Alison Krauss is the best that there is with LeAnn Rimes right behind her. :):):)

God bless you and them always!!! :):):)

Holly (a day one fan of LeAnn and a fan of Alison since 1994)

K D Lang without question from the 'usual suspects' list. Incredible vocalist and so EASY for her.

But here's a curve ball. My personal favourite is Joy Williams from The Civil Wars. This lady is the real deal. And sexy with it, if I'm being shallow.

I didn't like the song at all but from what I could hear of it she has a good voice...

Sometimes when I click these links I'm left totally bemused by peoples choices, but on this occasion I can hear why.

Maybe not the best but I loved the sound of her voice - Kirsty MacColl - New England

And this girl as well…Natalie Merchant, 10,000 Maniacs - My Mother the War

And this one too…Elizabeth Fraser, Cocteau Twins - Pearly Dew Drops Drops (Sigur Ros before Sigur Ros were even thought of?)

Great shout. Great song choice too. One of the few cover versions around better than the original
