As someone who doesn't go to concerts and normally listens to songs on the radio, this is why, she sounded so awful I actually fast-forwarded most of it.

It's simple. You don't have to be a great singer to be a successful pop artist. It's a bonus, not a necessity. Put it through the recording studio machines and she sounds fine.
What she does have is good pop songs, an image, a look, and an ability to put on a show. In pop, collectively, that's so much more important than just being a pitch perfect singer.

Hardly when Beyoncé has sold over 500k in a matter of days. Eclipsing Katy and Rihanna easily, they're just singles artists.
Katy is on Capitol Records, their only other big artist is Coldplay so she gets a lot of preferential treatment. She has some good pop songs, but that's mainly down to the production and writers. Certainly not her voice or performing skills..
