No. It's not coming here, limited to the South which is disappointing as I bought a pedalo

But rest of UK, have fun.

Not quite sure what I'm supposed to do to be prepared for a lot of rain and some wind.

Guess I'll just stay put and eat/drink!

I wouldn't try using an umbrella in the high winds.

I dont believe half of what the BBC says anymore, after the "great storm of 2013" earlier this year ;-)

I'm hoping to comically fly around in the style of Mary Poppins.

Friday's weather is predicted to be far worse than what is thrown at us today and tomorrow. Of course, the whole lot will be dismissed by a number of people, but in particular, Friday's storm is striking fear into the hearts of weather enthusiasts as the models continue to upgrade the storm after every run.

Which means it will fizzle out into nothing midweek and be an anti climax. ;-)

But on a serious note.. which parts of the country and how big?

By the many weather models used by meteorological agencies such as the Met Office, NOAA and JMA to name three.

Wasn't that the one that developed pretty much exactly as predicted?

    Not where I live.

We were forecast huge storms like we did back in the 80's....my hairdryer blows harder than the wind that day!

It's absurd for trains to be cancelled in advance, because of likely bad weather. That never used to happen many years ago - we've become a risk averse country where common sense goes out the window. We used to just get on with it and cope but now everyone is told to avoid travelling.

    Ok, joking aside

For those with some weather knowledge

Explosive Cyclogenesis: when pressure falls by more than 24mb in 24hrs.

    Today's storm, it's dropping 60mb in 24hrs!

The storm is riding a jet stream which is unusually strong, it's flowing at 275mph (google jet stream)
Planes flying from the States to the Uk, will have one hell of a tail wind, and probably arrive much earlier than scheduled

This storm, it's Super Explosive Cyclogenesis

Similar for the storm later in the week

Now, you can see the concern

We'd need to get into detailed specifics of where you are and exactly what was predicted for your location (including probabilities), and I doubt either of us can be bothered.

What I remember is that the storm was predicted 4 days before it even formed - a rather impressive achievement, that would not have been possible even a few years ago - and that, overall, it was on the scale that had been predicted. And that it caused quite a lot of damage (which is why warnings were needed, which helped reduce the damage).

But it is not likely bad weather any longer. The systems are getting better and better at predicting how dangerous it may be.

From the point of view of those who might be killed it is eminently sensible.

It's been raining here quite a bit. It's to be expected though. We might not get the destructive winds hardly at all, but the rain more than makes up for it.

It´s winter! FFS what do you expect? A heatwave!?!

    This sensationalistic journalism.

It's not a serious storm till it's named, something like Samantha or Margret.:):D

Im sorry, but statements like this annoy me.

For my area, the storm was every bit as severe as predicted. Huge trees down, damage to property etc.

Consider yourself very lucky that it didnt track to your area.

    .

But that's my point. It WAS tracked to my area but never materialised.

Since you are persisting with this, how about telling us your location? Perhaps somebody will be able to account for your obvious disappointment at being excluded by the storm.
