I keep wondering about Jordan Rhodes for a striker? Blackburn need the money, no matter whether they get promotion or not; they are facing hefty fine over their debts. I reckon they would be open to do a deal in January if they could get the player back on loan till the end of the season. Basically the same situation Utd and Palace cooked with over Zaha last year. With Suarez and Sturridge around we need a third striker who could do a job, but also won't mind spending some time on the bench.
why would Jordan Rhodes not mind spending time on the bench?? I dont think his next career move will be to become a bench warmer.
Also dont think for one minute that blackburn would sell him on the cheap.
I like him, he is a great finisher but he isnt the quickest. Not quite sure if he is the right kind of striker for our team to be honest.

Any striker we bring in, if indeed we do, faces the same situation. Why would Rhodes be tempted to accept it? A hefty lump in wages and a move to a top of the table PL side who could be in the CL? I take the point that he may prefer being a more regular starter with a team like Everton though. (not sure they could afford him)

Agreed, and FSG won't like that, especially with Borini and Aspas still on the books. In all honesty I'd be quite surprised if there was a large outlay on another striker this window.

Again I sort of agree, but it's that finishers instinct that I'd quite like to have in reserve.
I've been a bit busy the last few days to comment on the news about Suarez (work has been WAY too much fun) but the news about his contract was an awesome Christmas present for us fans, he's extremely valuable to us.
I don't think it's just what he does himself as a player, his confidence is emanating through to the rest of the team and we really shouldn't underestimate that part of his game. MOTD alluded to this slightly by talking about how good he is with the younger players as well. Also nice of them to point out that he passed the armband over, there's a lot of other players might not have done that. Really would love to see him lead us to a title but this season I'd settle for us just aiming to finish as high as possible and hopefully get CL football and kick on from there.
Not forgetting to give credit to the other players, sloppy concession again but I think they took their foot off the pedal in the end.
Absolute credit to both sets of supporters in the support for Mackay, we've been there with the bad owners (and yes the jury is still out on FSG but they're nowhere near as bad as the previous two) and it isn't a thing I'd wish on any club.
Oh and by the way Luis, where's my invite to that big party you're clearly having when you're buying all that drink?

Whoever is the third choice striker is on a hiding to nothing with Suarez and Sturridge in the squad, there is no way another will be bought in, the January targets will be for a wide man in the attacking area - Mohamed Salah or Yevhen Konoplianka types, a CM and maybe a FB (esp the way Johnson is playing!). Alonso is not the type of player Liverpool need these days, the game has moved on I think from a relatively "static" passer/playmaker towards something more dynamic.
Why do we need another striker when we've already scored 42 goals this season? That's only 5 fewer than we scored in the whole of the 2011-12 season ,and one of our main strikers has been missing from many of the games we've played so far.
Jordan Rhodes is too good to not play for Liverpool and not good enough to play for Liverpool.
If he was signed he would have to rely on illness or injury to get a game and thats not good for his development as a player. Liverpool have shown that they can be excellent with just one out and out striker so there is no incentive for a player to sign to be the 3rd striker.

... and in the alterternative premier league (starting 1st January) Liverpool still have the best goal difference upto this weekend and are 4th in the table

why another striker? - imo you need replacements in all positions and apart from striker I do think we have decent back up all over the pitch. If we assume LS and DS are in our first choice 11 then if either are not available (as now) we do not have someone to step in so we change the formation to one up front - which I am not sure is good. We saw it earlier in the season when we went to 5 at the back when Coutinho was injured not cos of any footballing reasons and that bothered me. We need to have a formation and try to stick with it - altho yes at times for different fixtures it may have to be tweaked.
Re who to bring in as 3rd choice striker to only play if LS or DS is out is a problem I agree - I would fancy Rhodes but I am not sure he'd come to us if he was unlikely to play - he would prefer a move to a PL club where he would get regular games. So who then? - I look at the likes of Lambert and Noone who as LFC fans would both crawl to Anfield to play for LFC but they are either too old or not good enough and tbh signing LFC fans has not always worked out well. Fletcher from Sunderland has (or had) a good record but would he come? Then Ings from Burnley but Championship strikers rarely do that well at PL level. Some relatively unknown overseas player? - may be cheap but would be a risk - Aspas has not been a success has he - and Borini whilst maybe a bit better I remain unconvinced by.
At the end of the day I think I better leave it to the experts and hope we get a good one in - altho tbh BR to me in the transfer market has a mixed record with Sturridge and Coutinho the stand out successes and many of last summers yet to convince with only Mig and Sakho getting regular games.
I am sure there will be additions in January - lets hope we get it as right as we did last year.

Didn't they turn down 10m in the summer from Wigan? Untested at the top level, would be a huge gamble IMO.
Really pleased with the result and how we played. Flanagan has really surprised me in the way he has been playing, looks like a new player.
The team still needs a few more tweaks. Loses concentration in the second half although we had a brilliant first 45mins. Fantastic win though and no serious complaints, enjoying this half of the season, the next games are very important and the concentration will need to be 100% for both 45 mins.
I would be happy with another DM, it's a must. Any other new players in January will be brilliant, we tend to do well at this time of the year - hmm Suarez...😎

They did indeed, but according to the media reports I've been reading their finances are a mess and a hefty FFP fine is looming (same for QPR, incidently).
I only brought him up as it was mentioned they'd been talking about another striker on LFC.TV and Rhodes would be my 3rd striker in my own personal fantasy squad. I agree with others above, I highly doubt we'll make any significant moves for another striker. It would seem names like Bertrand, Salah, Fernando and maybe Hughes (even though BR denied that one) are more like the type of players and positions we're interested in this window.
As for Rhodes: one of the mid-table teams might take a chance and throw some money on him; maybe Villa or Stoke, or maybe even West Brom depending on the new manager...or Davie will sell Hernandez and Welbeck and take him as a replacement ;-)
The 3 points yesterday look even more important in light of the Spurs and Everton results this afternoon. Here's hoping for a draw at the Emirates tomorrow night.
His not mobile enough for the top level. Would be a crazy gamble.
Yes, I was willing to take a punt on him in the desperation of the pre-Sturridge days but things have moved on. We are now clearly a club on the rise and will attract players that represent far less of a gamble.
A draw tonight would be awesome - the chance to spend Christmas at the top of the table.
I really think the hard work of both BR and the owners is starting to show now. Keeping Suarez and getting the very best out of him when so many expected him to sulk. Getting him tied to a new contract which, at the very least, offers us some protection when it comes to any potential transfer fee - and also getting it done just before the January window means it is a distraction we won't have this window.
Here's hoping we can bring in a player or two in Jan that will actually enhance the first XI. (I'm half wondering about a sneaky bid for Ashely Cole as unlikely as it would be!).
Yeh, the Hull result really does look worse every week, but then these things happen. It serves as a nice reminder of how far we still have to go and hopefully will remind the players they still need to perform even in games we "should" win.
The more I see City's defence, the more I feel we may cause them problems on Thursday, especially if Demichelis plays. However, they're probably thinking along similar lines with Skrtel is pushing the boundaries of legal defending right now.
Another 2-2 would do me just fine. With their home record, even against the better sides, that would represent a good day's work.
Bottom line is I just want us to emerge from the game with our recent confidence still intact having done ourselves justice.
I think leaving the City game with any points would be a huge result for us and show we're capable of standing up with the big boys. But having seen them demolish some top teams already it's not a game I'm looking forward to!
If we play like we did against Spurs (you know - like an average team...) then we have a chance but we will need to be at our best to come away with anything.

Good times to be a Liverpool supporter right now!
Still have nightmares about the last one.
