Hi there,
Just bought a second hand Sony STR-DB790 QS 6.1 AV receiver amp and was wandering what sort of sub I will need (passive or active) I have no idea when it comes to AV stuff so many thanks in advance.

it uses an active sub. As apparent from the fact is just has a single phono socket for the Sub output rather than a pair of binding posts like the rest of the speaker connections.
You can use both, passive or active.
Active would connect via a single phono between sub and amp, low level.
Passive would connect via speaker level, basically you'd connect your front speakers to the sub then run cables from the sub to the front speaker terminals on the amp, high level.
Most generally go with active as they have their own power and won't drain the amp, you also have more control over certain outputs, ie. Volume/phase/LFE.....
A good sub will be rewarding, so choose wisely.
