I think professional reviewers tend not to place such importance on the entertainment aspects of a film, as someone who has to pay cash to watch a film you should. There are no qualifications required to review, there is very little intellect needed to sit infront of a screen, any idiot can do that, so don't take very much notice.
I saw this film last night, although it was long as others have said the time flew by. But must admit the last 30 odd minutes seemed a bit slower than the rest of the movie but this was possibly the content showed during that bit.
But there were some really LOL moments in the movie, which had the packed cinema laughing!
Leo was great and worth the awards he has been picking up recently!
So that's 2 out of the Best Picture movies I've seen now, next up 12 years a slave!
I really don't get the acclaim for this film - I can't see how this rise/fall/divorce/jail story is any better or more interesting than other similar films.
I know that the lack of financial detail and victims is just a way of underlining the moneygrabbing bubble Belfort was in. However, all it leaves you with is a string of wild party anecdotes, which certainly don't deserve a 3 hour Scorsese film with DiCaprio playing the lead. I can't see what the fuss is all about.
it is rather similar to a lot of other films , well ... mainly Scorsese films , or films that ripped him off .
it was ok , it was funny at times .
but the main character is a bit 'thin' , also I'm not sure about Decaprio , some of his speeches weren't really that well done , he just does that thing like he's straining to get something out .
of course there's another film that its rather similar too - Catch me if you Can . I watched this again the other week , hadn't meant to , I was just gonna watch a bit , but then I watched a bit more and so on (always a sign of a good movie)
anyway - it's really good , the individual scams are good , it's clever , lots of great performances , ok the father-son thing is typical Spielberg schmaltz , but it rings true .
The performances are excellent and it's a really enjoyable film. I found myself wondering that if I had watched this as a man in his 20's instead of 40's whether I would have wanted to aspire to live like these people instead of just thinking of them as shallow dicks.
If you had visited YouTube your post would have been different. He makes a big deal in the video that it's not that the main character is dislikeable that ruined it for him - he's liked films when the lead is dislikeable before, it's more that we never find a way into Leo's character, he has no depth or anything you can relate to therefore you don't care about him. Watching a 3 hour movie about someone you don't care about is tedious.
Couldn't stream when I posted due to crap pub wi-fi but I've seen Kermode's review now and you're right.
I loved this film!! Leo was fantastic and the character Jordan was so similar to my ex-husband (aside from the making millions part) that I could relate to the situations he found himself in very well It's less funny when you actually live with a character like that, but the film was at times hilarious
Pains me to say this, and it really does pain me... But I didn't enjoy it. The first half an hour but 3 hours of Leonardo DiCaprio overacting and seeing endless female characters get their tits out and be degraded just didn't appeal to me in the end. I really wanted to love it but it had all the charm of a bruised banana.
The bit where he was tripping out and crawling round the house was funny. But it didn't save the film.
The challenge of the movie is taht it eschews easy moralising-or indeed any moral comment upon Belforts' nefarious addictive misdeeds.
Scorsese is not a moralist, but an artist, and he trusts his audience enough to make up their own mind after plunging them head first into the designer sleaze of the universe of this narcissistic yuppy.
Dicaprios' performance is vituosic, the supporting cast of Hill, Robbie, Chandler and the lately great Mathew Maconaughey are stunning, and Marty himself has produced a manic raging bull of a movie his peers (Spielberg,Coppola, De Palma et al ) would wish they could still produce.
I disagree with those who said Di Caprio's character was completely unlikable. In fact, as I've already mentioned, my ex-husband had very similar views on life and displayed some of the behaviour shown in the film. Of course such behaviour is beyond idiotic, but the main character's charm, ambition and charisma are qualities that can be very attractive - especially to the opposite sex.
This is one of the best films I've seen in years! Leo's performance was brilliant and although the character is truly vile, I found him highly amusing (which I felt terribly guilty about ).
It has been so long since a movie has made me laugh out loud, like REALLY laugh!! It certainly didn't feel like 3 hours...
Those that are put off because they don't like bankers or they're concerned about this "glamourizing" what they did are just cutting their nose off to spite their face. It is truly a great film!

I think those that are saying this is a 'truly great film', really need to step back and get a little perspective.
Whilst it's undoubtably very watchable, there's really no substance to it.
1) Man makes a lot of money.
2) Man spends money in a myriad of debauched ways
3) Man gets caught
For 3 hours, it does wear a little thin.
Can you honestly tell me this film is in anywhere near the same league as Goodfellas or Casino?...I'm all ears.
To be fair, that plot synopsis pretty much describes both Goodfellas and Casino as well to a degree. Both are about people who make a lot of money, spend a lot of money, then eventually implode by either being ousted, arrested or killed.

"Marty " and greatness have been estranged since 1990.
lol
Is it nearly 3 hours or something?

Rubbish.
Casino, Gangs of New York,, The Aviator, The Departed and now The Wolf of Wall Street are all great films.
Shutter Island and Hugo were weaker, but still highly enjoyable.

did anyone else love the plane scene? haha
indeed it was!
Wonderful stuff
Absolute bollocks of course , but obviously heartfelt and touching even.

Women want him and men want to be him.

I'm not surprised he's your ex.
