A very dear friend of mine died earlier today - 19th February 2014.

John Tarren, ex-pitman (pit 'Yakker') circa 1970,Wingate Colliery County Durham, NE England.

I visited him for the last time yesterday evening at Beauley Lodge Care Home, Fencehouses, Co Durham,DH4 6DN. The staff there cared for him admirably, and he died peacefully in hospital this am. Dry as sticks humour, bright, and like me, was a friend of Lambert and Butler.

Not sure whether his demise will be announced in the Sunderland Echo, hence this post.

The lad was an octogenarian, not exactly certain of his age/DOB.

LOVED him, like the friendly Uncle I never had.

R.I.P. John Tarren, may God bless you marra.

Sorry friends. Looked at options, could not find a more appropriate platform. Thanks for the show of empathy though, it is appreciated.

I think it's good to give him a send off like this. So much respect for the pitmen - that must've been such a hard and sometimes scary job. Allan Clarke, when he was manager of Barnsley FC, once took his team down a mine to spend time with the pitmen, and they never complained about training or whatever again. I couldn't have done a job like that for five minutes, so God bless ya John Tarren!

This man deserves a mention as much as any celebrity that has died.

Our country was built through the blood and sweat of the working classes.

    Rest In Peace John Tarren.

My great grandfather was a pitman in Durham. Hard men who knew what real work was.

    RIP.

Cyrus1967 you have informed the internet world of the demise of a gentleman your admired and respected, where it was posted is of no consequence !
From your description he sounds like the the type of man that was the backbone of this nation, you are wholly correct in publicising his death. Hopefully this will inform some people who may have known him and wish to pay their respects.
I am sorry for your loss.
    R.I.P. John Tarren.

    ... an update.

I spoke to my Minister, Rev Derek at St Andrew's Church, Chilton Moor and Fencehouses, DH4 6LU, just along the road to John, yesterday (Sunday 23.02.2014 @ 1112) who explained to me there may be a possibility a Christian Clergyman may not be available to attend John's internment as he had no funds put aside for the event of his death.

I am not an ordained minister, however would be honoured to say a few words about John, play his favourite song, and say 'The Lord's Prayer' if allowed by Durham County Council Social Services Department, who are dealing with his affairs.

They will be getting a call from me 'first-thing'.

I think it is shameful that a minister will not be present, however I am sure that you will do a sterling job Cyrus1967.
I do so hope that you will not be the only person present to say goodbye to the gentleman, had I not been the other end of the country I would have made a point of attending.
Respect to you and the late Mr John Tarren RIP.

It's awful that our 'caring ' church won't do it without payment
At least he had a good friend
    Well done to you

Condolences to you Cyrus. It's a lovely gesture on your part to speak about your friend in such a loving way. I wouldn't mind too much if there isn't a Minister to do the readings. In my experience if the clergy doesn't know your friend very well then the service can be very impersonal. I have been to a couple of funerals where it has been pretty obvious the minister didn't know the deceased. One funeral I attended the vicar called my friend John when his name was Jack. This can understandably be very distressing for family and friends there.
Friends, family and those wishing to pay respects are the ones who should speak.

Take care and RIP John Tarren.
