I did read the books and Chummy most defiantly did exist.
Yes we know she existed in the books, but nobody seems to know if she existed in real life. For instance there was a top nursing award which she was supposed to have won a couple of years in a row, but that award doesn't exist. Also her father was supposed to have been the Governor of Rajasthan, but he couldn't have been as all the Governors have been Indian.

I read an article during the first series of CTM - probably in the Radio Times- which asked if Chummy was real. As I think someone else has mentioned elsewhere, the older nuns from the Mother House didn't remember her, but Jennifer Worth's daughter apparently said that her mother had pointed at a very tall nurse in a group photograph and said that was Chummy.
Maybe Chummy is based on a tall nurse who did actually have some of the qualities we'd recognise in the character from the book/TV series but Jennifer Worth gave her a bit more of a fictional back story or different characteristics?

That might be it. If the Chummy we see on telly was based on an actual person I doubt the nuns would have forgotten her!
Love this series, but would really have liked to watch the whole episode !!! Sky+ ended a few minutes before the end and sky catch-up only downloaded the first 42 minutes. Not happy
The none HD version downloads the whole 60 mins. I watched the HD version last night and thought wtf at 42 mins! So went back to On Demand and saw the other version had the whole hour so had to wait a bit to see the end, phew!

When Miranda was cast for the role, I laughed andI thought she
was a perfect cast for Chummy.
Same here, when I read Miranda had been cast in the show I knew exactly which part she would be playing without being told.

Was that the coach they used then, how do you know if it is please?
Good link.
There is an article somewhere to say it was used: I googled the registration number.....

Things change so much, when I had my middle boy 20 years ago, we hardly saw anyone, until just before he was born, left in a room to get on with it.
She'll get ECT
