Tricky one, this. I'd have to throw Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen and Transmetropolitan in there but everything else would probably vary depending on my mood... Sandman, Lucifer, late-80s Uncanny X-Men, New Avengers (up to a point)... I've liked Spider-man on and off all my life but I don't think there's any I'd class in my top 10. This is harder than working out a top 10 of movies!
Asterix and TinTin (always go together in my mind, as that's how I used to borrow them from my local library as a child)
Like Lennon & McCartney!
Anyway, heres my 10;
Spiderman (70s UK)
MWOM (70s UK)
Roy Of The Rovers
Tiger
Victor
Hotspur
Whooppee
The Beano
2000AD
and, I'm not sure if you can count it as a comic, but, Shoot!
1) leauge of extraordinary genetlemen
2) knights of pendragon (series 1)
3) untold tales of spiderman
4) spiderman 2099
5) spider girl
6) Harley quinn
7)death's head (1&2)
8)Adam strange (mistery in space)
9) the beano
10) the viz
Comics that I read and collected, from best to least best:
Eagle (1950s/60s version) -
Doctor Who Weekly
Eagle (the relaunched 1980s version)
2000AD (the first ten years)
Scream!
Misty
Countdown/TV Action
Battle (pre-Action Force)
Jackpot
Nutty
An honourary second place goes to TV Century 21 comic, only because I've never been able to afford the issues and only owning half a dozen of them but from what I have seen it was exceptional.
Powers - Brian M Bendis
Watchmen - Alan Moore
Dark Knight Returns - Frank Miller
Miracleman / Marvel Man - Alan Moore
The Boys - Garth Ennis
Stray Bullets - David Lapham
Dark Avengers / New Avengers / Avengers / Alias - Brian M Bendis
Chronicles of Wormwood - Garth Ennis
DMZ - Brian Wood
NYX - Joe Quesada (!)
Mainstream Marvel and DC are dying on me at the mo!
Image comics, and the Indies are producing the only stuff worth reading (as well as DC's Vertigo and Marvel's Icon sub-brands) at the mo... current favourite has to be Image's Stray Bullets pick-up and maybe Vertigo's pick up of Astro City.
Marvel's Secret Wars heralds the possible end of my reading of Marvel... but a part of me what's to see how Ultimate Spidey is integrated.
I only ever read my mate's comics (other than the Eagle when I was about 10-11) and the ones I remember were....
Watchmen - Far and away the most sophisticated and adult and best comic I ever read.
One of the X men ones where Jean Grey ends up in some other dimensional world and Angel is featured a lot.
One of the Batman ones. The Killing Joke or some title similar to that.
This is a while ago so I'm a bit vague about it all. I did reread Watchmen around the time the movie came out so am far more familiar with that. For me, Watchmen was at a whole other level compared to the few others I read.
Batman/Detective Comics (new look 1964 Carmine Infantino)
Hawkman (for Murphy Anderson's artwork)
The Flash (Carmine Infantino)
Conan (Barry Smith
Daredevil
Thunder Agents (Wallace Wood)
Nick Fury Agents of Shield (Jack Kirby)
Fantastic Four (Jack Kirby)
The Atom (DC) (Gil Kane)
The Steel Claw (UK)
Which were your favourite strips in TV Century 21 and the Eagle?
For TV21, mine were: The Daleks, Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet.
For (1950s/60s) Eagle: Dan Dare, PC49, Fraser of Africa, UFO Agent, The Guinea Pig, Luck of the Legion and Smokeman. Also loved the biography strips such as The Happy Warrior and Montgomery of Alamein.
2000AD
Star-Lord
The Uncanny X-Men
Starlord (Marvel, John byrne)
X-Men, God loves, Man Kills
Batman - The Killing Joke
Warlock (Jim Starlin)
Watchmen
VIZ
MAD (What a laugh!)
Glad you enjoyed MAD - I used to write (and occasionally draw) for the British version
My top ten (in brain dump order) are...
Beezer
Topper
Playhour
Rainbow
Mickey Mouse / Walt Disney Weekly
Tiger
Beano
Oink
Jack & Jill
And, OK, MAD - but it's not really a comic
In the USA, it would be... (no order)
Daredevil (Gene Colan)
Shield (Jim Steranko)
Spirit (Will Eisner)
Avengers (Don Heck)
Avengers (John Buscema)
Spiderman (John Romita)
Captain America (Steranko)
Sin City
Watchman
MAD (see above)
No mention for Scorcher yet.
This was my favourite. Martins marvelous Mini, Hot Shot Hamish and Roy Of The Rovers.
I loved when all the characters in Scorcher started playing cricket during the summer months.:D
Roy was a genius at cricket too.
Roy Of The Rovers got his own comic mid 70s. Maybe 1977?
Then Scorcher faded into nothing. Shame really because it was great.
Question: Which story in Scorcher had Everpool and Liverton as rivals?
