I've always lived in places with self locking doors, unless you put the "latch" on so the notion of a non locking door is a bit odd to me but the idea of leaving your front door unlocked when you are out or sleeping is plan crazy (I am a Londoner though and we all lock our doors!)

No we dont ;-)
Don't all double glazed doors need a key to lock?
All the double glazed ones I have had needed to be locked with a key, I have also had normal doors that needed a key.. much prefer them as you never get locked out
Where you been living all your life There are many doors that only close with a key. I have had many such locks.
My only worry about a shared house with each person locking the door behind them, is, if there is a fire and they cant find their key to get out.. I always leave mine in the lock, but I live on my own.
In places with proper front door latches where you only need a key to enter it seems
It's not in a porch it's in the actual flat. It creeps me out because if I am sleeping naked in bed he could quite easily toddle down the corridor if he fancied it and have a a peek.
He used to leave stuff outside even when it was raining which sometimes meant my parcels ended up all gross
Seems I am wrong though and it is normal for your postman to just let himself into your house nowadays...
That is just not right!!!! How dare he even open your door!!!! (Mind you if I was in bed my door would be locked anyway...you never know who is around!)

I agree. ‘ Weird & creepy’ doesn’t come close to describing his outrageous behaviour. >:(
He deserves to lose his job and face criminal prosecution, and hopefully a very lengthy jail sentence.

Why?? If previous (or current) tenants asked him to do this how is the postie meant to know when other people move in or the rules change? For all THEY know it's flats with a communal entrance and hallway like most flats these days, not just a house share.
By leaving the main door unlocked the tenants are being lazy and may be breaking the tenant agreement and insurance rules.
You can get locks with a thumb turn thing in the inside, so it is easy to lock and unlock from the inside, but you can't accidentally get locked out - best of both worlds!

Thanks for your contribution. Your comment speaks volumes about you too.
The front door to my flat has no latch - it does not lock automatically when you shut it you need to physically lock it with a key or it is unlocked. If I have the door locked when I am up and someone knocks it is always very annoying as I have to find my key before I open the door.
Although it is a student property it doesn't look like one, it is in a row of residential houses/flats. There is no reason to assume it is a student property.

So, you'd rather risk someone walking in to rob you, or worse, than look for your key if someone comes to the door? Argh! I'm sorry, but the more you talk about it the more I think your priorities are off. You're certainly not the only person who feels like this or has felt like it at some point, but they learn/ed what's best to do.
The answer to having to keep looking for your key is to always put your key in the same place when you get home. Even if it's in a little pot on your table. Or hang it from a little hook inside your bedroom door. Anything like that (but not near your front door). If you keep it in a jacket pocket, always leave the jacket in the same place. Wherever you decide to put it, you'll never have to rummage for it again.
If you don't want random people wandering in and out of your flat, lock the front door.
Something so obvious should not be as difficult as this for a houseful of students to figure out. Whatever sort of door/lock you have, that is the bottom line. And if you can't be arsed locking it because it's too much of a faff, don't be surprised when you get burgled. Or worse.
Couldnt they put one of those slide lock things what you get on bathroom doors on the front door?
Youd still need a strong lock for safety and night times but in the day that kind of lock would be enough for the postman to assume its locked, and anyone else trying it. Plus you wouldnt have to look for a key if someone knocked at the door.

i have never heard of it, is it a tv programme ?
I always lock the front door, day and night..Never unlocked ..i feel scared in case some nutter does walk in or in case of burglary ..The keys are in the door locked in case family calls, but i take them out and hang them up at night
Just phone the Royal Mail to complain. He'll soon stop it. He shouldnt be coming in to your house under any circumstances, and you shouldnt feel obliged to lock your door if you dont want to.

I don't "get" the whole unlocked door situation BUT suffice to say if someone creepy and/or weird had access to my home I would reconsider my stance about locked doors.
Get some keys cut, give them to your flat mates and creepy / weird (or totally norma?) post man can't get in to your flat.

Proper.. is one where you cannot lock yourself out with the keys inside.
That's what latches were made for
No.. I'm talking about, "as you pull the door closed to go to work, you realise to late your keys are inside"
Not just popping to the garden or to the bin.
Not done that since I was about 13! Teaches you never to leave your house without your keys I can tell you
Plus it means I can just shut my door and go (like a fancy hair commercial)
*Flick*

Its very abnormal for the majority of us!!!

One is a key safe.

The other is a combination lock (not recommended if you live with other people), unless you also have a lock with a key. See above.

Wilkinson do similar products. See also Argos.
