dear ds , ,,,, i realise that this is a family site ,,, but is there anyway in which you could impliment an adults only room. ? ,, with id checks etc if necessary etc .

the taking down of miss pino's '' offensive jokes'' thread was a shame , ,,, i realise why you had to close it obviously as a lot of minors read your site etc,,,

surely it wouldn't be too hard

When you say room, do you mean a sub forum?

Or are you talking about a room in your house?

Maybe anyone who wanted to 'join' this 'room' could supply valid credit card details to verify they were over 18? Once approved, they'd then be free to post all manner of filthy and offensive posts without any comeback whatsoever. Is that the sort of thing you had in mind? I can't see what could possibly go wrong with that.

ETA - OP, if you want an 'anything goes' forum, surely there's plenty of those already you could sign up for? Isn't that what 4Chan does? I don't believe DS has ever had a policy of allowing completely 'free' speech (much to the astonishment of some people, which I've never understood). It just isn't intended to be that sort of site.

The problem with such a sub-forum is that people wouldn't know where the line was.

If it was "adult" jokes, pictures and generally stuff that would generally be rated '18' if it was in a film then it would probably work, but with some of the more 'esteemed' members of DS, they'd likely continue to post the most offensive things they could, just because they could.

It's always a good idea in principle but never in practice.

I don't have a credit card, and will never have one ever again.

I posted an offensive jokes thread a couple of years ago, it was up to many pages before it too got nuked.

I then started a "Completely non offensive, PC jokes" thread. But it was almost impossible to post a joke that didn't offend someone, so it died :(

There are no plans for an "adult only" forum. But for the fact there is no way to actually confirm someone really is who they say they are, this isn't the place for pictures of people being beheaded, racist, sexist or otherwise offensive jokes and nude images. There are plenty of other sites that contain these sorts of things if that is what you are looking for.

you misunderstand me , im not into anything extreme , and i know there are plenty of other sites ,,, im not on about pictures either .

i just felt sorry for miss pino , afterall we all receive topical jokes off m8's as texts etc , and she did label it/pre warn '' offensive '' , so anyone entering knew what they were getting themselves into etc.

it would just be nice to have an over 18 section ,,, which ''could'' be done through credit card verification or similar as suggested above ,,,,,

and whats more , you could still moderate it if you felt it got too offensive .

    Thanks trayhop.
Personally I think common sense is lacking on this forum. It's down to the naughtier posters to label their posts as not being for those of an easily offended nature, or people to ignore stuff they get normally offended by (i.e. general sexual jokes). If someone genuinely takes a slight, then yes try and debate it in a grown up manner and I do realise posts of a naughty nature will get blurred on threads about things of a not-so-naughty nature.

But at the end of the day, threads about severed penises and offensive jokes are going to contain material of an "adult" nature. We don't need a separate forum for those, we just need people to exercise the good common sense to avoid them if they feel it's something that will offend.

People seem to absolutely love being offended lately. I'd hate to see this place turning into the Daily Mail but alas it appears to be.

i agree , but i also see digital spy's position , their a nationally recognised site with thousands of child members , and thus there would be uproar if it wasn't moderated the way it is etc .

thats why a credit card verification or similar would seem an obvious and easy solution for an extra room ,,,,,,,, but i guess it will fall on deaf ears ,,,,,,,,

oh well miss pino m8 ,,,,,, nice try anyhow

It would also divert threads from the main forum, and I'm not sure General Discussion could survive the loss of all the Nazi goat porn.

How would you verify the credit card belonged to that person? "An obvious and easy solution" isn't so obvious and easy once you factor in other things, such as who would have to sort through the verification process - and given how many people frequent our forums - that in itself is a hefty, time-consuming task.

You may be saying "I'm not talking about pictures or videos" but would everyone else feel the same way? Does it make sense to allow offensive/adult text but not offensive/adult imagery and video?

People are quick to take offence here that's true, but in the site's defence, it has positioned itself as a mainstream entertainment source and, I guess, has a responsibility to its affiliates and other commercial interests to maintain a clean, controversy free and accessible forum. It might mean people have to reign it in a bit, but there are other places to let off steam.

You've also got the information security around credit card details issue as well. And the cost of relevant secure software to cover those, and the legal issues around any site that relies on credit card details being provided or quoted anywhere.

I have read, and contributed to, threads with bawdy humour but have yet to see anything I would consider explicit or offensive...you can't censor everything on the internet because children may read it, and DS forum members 99% of the time stay well within the boundaries of decency during conversation.

There's a time and a place for everything.

I certainly didn't like Giles Coren's recent PIE 'satire', for example, but contrary to what some FMs thought when I made a thread about it, I wasn't calling for him or it to be banned altogether. Merely that his humour ought to be in some Private Eye-style satirical magazine, where people who buy it know what to expect, not the comments pages of The Times alongside Matthew Parris and Daniel Finkelstein.

If the potentially offensive jokes are in a thread marked 'Potentially Offensive Jokes' then I don't see a problem... people who then click on it and are then offended have no excuse! :D

In many ways, people who think its okay for offensive content to catch people unawares in a quality newspaper, open forum or pre-watershed tv, and others who deliberately seek out offensive content in order to be offended by it, are part of the same problem.

Why would someone want to make offensive jokes?

There are other sites on the internet where you can look at many nude images etc. as you like.

I'd feel seedy even posting in it. It would cause more *MAH's too, who wouldn't want to be 'seen' posting in it :D
