So many great songs spring to mind, but the first to surface on this occasion are;
The Good -
Never Be Mine - Kate Bush
"They're setting fire to the cornfields as you're taking me home. The smell of burning fields, will now mean you and here."
The (beyond) Bad -
Season in the Sun - Terry Jacks
"Goodbye my friend it hard to die, when all the birds are singing in the sky."
The former is evocative and uplifting, the latter just bloody depressing. When Kate Bush is on my radio, I turn it up, when Terry Jacks is played, I change channel.
These ones always get me:
Fast Car - Tracey Chapman
Stay - Sugarland
This Woman's Work - Kate Bush
Dance With My Father - Luther Vandross
Mad World - Gary Jules
Irvine - Kelly Clarkson
I Got Money Now - P!nk
Leona Lewis' version of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
So many sad songs out there. I can honestly say these four get my vote as the singers manage to get the full emotion of their respective experiences out and in to these songs.
Lene Marlin - A Place Nearby (1999)
Everyone will have a song the really connects personally to you and this one is mine. Anyone who has had someone special to them on whatever level and lost them through illness, accident or age will probably feel this deep down as well. This just gets me every single time I play it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVF6VDT5y8Q
Bring Me The Horizon - Don't Go (2010)
Not the first band you think off I know. The story behind the song is truly horrific. Terry Hurst was murdered in Sheffield while camping by the very people who invited him. BMTH lead singer Oli is believed to have know Terry from school. Very emotional lyrically and the story behind it I think sad doesn't do it justice. Lyric video link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NFzDSudw10
Eisley - Ambulance (2011)
There are probably a lot more powerful songs out there but this felt like an look in to some very personal emotions of the two siblings. It tells a story of betrayal and certainly heartache. Sherri was going through a marriage break-up and her sister Stacy obviously felt a lot of that pain as well. Stacy really delivered on this one she helped to write. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwUYAR1SzAY
Patty Griffin - Tony (1998)
Patty has so many songs that could go on a list like this but this really takes it up a level. Songs about teenage suicide are always going to be extremely emotional. I couldn't actually find a decent clip on youtube to link it so here is one for the lyrics and it has an audio player also http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/patty+griffin/tony_20105319.html .
