Here we go .. *climbs aboard merry-go-round* ..

Obviously this will become the de-facto reason for the usual few on DS ..
The row at Chilwell Croft Academy in Birmingham, mainly involving Muslim parents,

    .. while this ..
some Christian parents had also complained.

    .. and this ..
    a minority group of parents

.. will most likely be completely ignored in favour of the usual tub-thumping anti-islamic rhetoric ..

Anyway, my own opinion is that it's a shame the man has felt the need to resign his post. Based on what little there is about the literature books, it doesn't seem to be that "gay is normal" was promoted above everything else, it seems more in line with treating everyone equally, which is fair enough.
One lesson describes a picnic at which gay families are guests. Pupils are encouraged to treat all the picnic guests equally and not to use the word “gay” as an insult.

Once again religion has reared it's ugly head to '' beat'' common sense into submission. I don't care which faith is the more vocal in their condemnation...it is wrong!

I was ready to be controversial and say a teachers personal opinions shouldn't be taught in the classroom.

Then I read the reports. Now I'm angry. It's a shame he felt he had to quit his job. As for the parents that opposed his lessons, I hope they enjoy their bubble, and I hope their children see them one day for what they are, putting their beliefs above their children.

The fact that we're living in the.21st has nothing to do with anything; it's a number.

Making it legal doesn't make it more acceptable to people.

His books, entitled Challenging Homophobia in Primary Schools, have been used in literacy lessons for 10- and 11-year-olds, including those at Chilwell Croft.

What has his book about tackling Homophobia got to do with literacy?

Shakespeare, and lots of Classic children's' books to choose from, and they choose his book.

But it wasn't just Muslims, was it? There were Christian parents chipping in with their bigoted complaints too...each as bad as the other.

No, it reflects that it already is.

I'm not sure where hate for this guy is mentioned. They have not-as far as I know- objected to him teaching their children; they object to what he is teaching them; and surly that is their right.

Does it; or does it reflect the ruling government's position?

I'm not sure this is about homophobia, not in this case. Havent there been reports in the news about groups in Muslim communities trying to replace moderate head teachers with hardline Muslim ones?.....

In this case, it reflected that it was already sufficiently acceptable in general that it could (and should) be legalised without too much fuss.

it wouldn't surprise me if the people complaining just saw the word "gay" and blew a gasket without actually looking in to the context of what was being taught.

But then I suspect even if they'd actually realised that he was teaching tolerance and acceptance more than anything, they'd still have wanted the text books re-written to remove any reference of "gay".

It's not ok, obviously. It's never ok to use any religion to silence the teaching of tolerance..which this teacher was attempting to do.
You used the analogy that if it were a Muslim teacher they, whomever they may be, would not like it...well if it were any teacher, of any denomination and they taught tolerance, and acceptance of others and a small minority of parents did not like it,then in my opinion those parents are wrong.
