Am I right in saying that the contract does not allow the first two rounds of the FA Cup to be part of The Football League show even though it would be the logical place?
Why on earth would the logical place for the FA Cup be a highlights show devoted to a completely different competition?
Why on earth would the logical place for the FA Cup be a highlights show devoted to a completely different competition?
Because most teams involved will be from the football league, and their fans will be used to getting their highlights from The Football League Show. Totally understand why the FA won't allow it though.
Cracking semi-final today (even though we lost), and really liked the BT coverage - David James has improved significantly over the season, McManaman as always is impressive, Warnock was interesting (loved his comment to Bruce - "At what point did you realise your tactics were rubbish" and Rio looked a real natural there, and wouldn't be surprised to see him follow Gary Neville into a good career on tv.
I never realised how small Neil Warnock was though, he was like a hobbit surrounded by the other four
It's a real shame that Sky chose to go up against the semi with the Swansea - Chelsea game, as no doubt that will have affected the viewing figures, and that 5-3 game was much more exciting than the borefest on ITV yesterday...!
There has been nothing wrong with ITV's coverage. I also seriously doubt that the BBC or BT could bring many new ideas to the table, (after all most people are ONLY interested in watching the actual match) and as long as both companies provide coverage of the match from the main camara position that will do for most people.
However I take the general point it will get better exposure on BBC. The real damage was by the FA putting it onto Setanta, that Setanta decision still baffles me now.
Have there been many 8:10pm kickoffs for FA Cup replays on ITV? I do not keep a list, but I would have thought the majority of kickoffs they have were 7:45pm.

I think the real damage was done by ITV and it was the FA's own fault.
You only have to look at viewing figures from that of ITV and when it was last shown on the BBC.

I also wonder whether there was something of a perception problem with the FA Cup being on ITV, as when you think of ITV football in general, you associate it with showing big matches involving your Man Utds and Chelseas and Arsenals - not Bishop's Stortford v Northampton Town early on a Sunday afternoon.
I think Dyke's comment related to how ITV covered the grass-roots, "romantic minnows" side of the cup, which is seemingly the most important part of the coverage for the FA yet for ITV, you always got the sense that they featured the early stages more out of obligation than enthusiasm so they could get to the likes of Arsenal v Liverpool and the other big matches they really wanted at the business end of the competition.
There was also another perception issue, of course, in how many people thought ITV just showed Man Utd live in every round - even if that wasn't the case - purely to pull in the biggest ratings in a way that seemed to contradict the ethos of the competition.
FA Cup Semi-final shown live on the BBC in 2005: 5.86million viewers
FA Cup Semi-final shown live on ITV yesterday: 10.6million viewers.
Yes, just look at the viewing figures. You can see why the competition is so unpopular now.
So enlighten me then if its not the figures why are the FA not happy with ITV's coverage of the FA Cup and they feel BBC and BT will bring in new ideas?

Iv no idea about that 2005 , but the 10.6 million was a peak figure. The actual average for the whole broadcast was 5.03 million. It was a great peak but it must also be considered that it was a rareish situation of extra time plus penalties and probably also swelled by people tuning in for Britains Got Talent which was delayed by 45 mins or so. Unusual situation which paid off handsomely for ITV, but not necessarily due entirely to the pull of the football.

Yep, You only have to look at the threads on this place when the draw is made for each round - "they'll show ManYoo cos they always do", when that isn't the case at all.
BBC I guess will advertise there coverage more than ITV do, on ITV you only seem to get. a few mentions of it, while BBC will probably make it a campaign come October saying so etching like FA Cup coming soon, and play it before other programmes.
I also feel maybe Focus or Score could come from a ground if it is gonna follow a match. focus tends to come from grounds at times
On how ITV covered the first couple of rounds, you could normally tell by Chiles comments, why are we at this shit hole today those were never his words but you sensed it

Could Sky have shown Swansea v Chelsea at noon if they had wanted to?

There were callers on 606 saying last night, moaning, that they had only traveled 1 mile in like an hour. So I'm not sure if they would do them later than 5.15, Mr Dyke said he had to think how fans gotnout
Ironically Hull City's biggest ever game - shown on BT sport - where people in Hull are not allowed to have BT.
So everyone in Hull who wanted to watch would have had to fork out for BT on SKY.
The public service aspect should have dictated that Hull v Sheffield was on FTA on ITV.
Let me correct a few points
Biggest game was probably the 2008 Play off final but today was huge
People in Hull are not "not allowed" to have BT. We have our own telephone and internet provider, Kingston Communication, and BT wont come into Hull as it would cost them too much money. You can get Virgin Media here too as well as Freeview and of course Sky.

The 2005 semi-final on BBC was Manchester United 4-1 Newcastle United, which kicked off at 1:00 on a Sunday, rather than an extra-time/penalties encounter on Saturday teatime.

But it had Man Utd in it. Surely Man Utd games get more viewers and that's why they're always on TV? ;-)
Ariusuk were the figures you quoted match averages or peaks, and if peaks over what time?
Ill miss itv coverage, thought clive t excellent, only blemish was thinking ars defender touched ball for pen.
Enjoyed smith and matterface. No idea what itv see in carlisle. Hull have not been consistently excellent all season and as arsenal are in close race for 4th, not sure they will do any 'mind games,' in the league game. I think he is very poor local radio standard.
Overall i think itv are very good given commercial constraints.

ESPN did the game and trophy presentation ad-free last year I believe, hope BT do the same!

The BBC this season did not bother showing the Football League Show when the Championship had a day off !!!
