EE: Nancy is practically a different character these days
Now don't get me wrong, Nancy is my homegirl and I love her, but I think I loved her a bit more when she had a spark and an edge about her. I was thinking when I watched her last night that she's barely recognisable as the gobby opinionated girl she came in as, rushing into a marriage with a ridiculously unsuitable guy just to wind her mum up and outing her brother in a moment of spite.
I know that she wasn't as popular back then as she is now but I found her a lot more interesting. I still love her relationship with Johnny and I suppose it's more realistic that siblings often fall into a more passive role if their other sibling is causing difficulties, but I'd like to see a bit more fire from her.
She really needs some development, some definition of character. It's all feeling very vague and changeable to whatever Carter drama is currently happening. It would be great to see some more of her, and what makes her tick.

She is a great character though and can be exlpored a lot more.
.
Love her!
To be honest I'm always a bit wary of characters who seem universally popular as that generally suggests (to me at least) that they're a bit bland and don't have much about them. Like I said, Nancy was pretty unpopular when she first came into the show despite not doing anything (IMO) to justify it; just being a normal frustrated young woman with a difficult mother and bad taste in men. Now I just don't really have any sense of what she's about and why she doesn't really interact with anybody outside of her family. I can handle her becoming a bit less popular if the trade off is that she gets some of her original spark back. This isn't a criticism in any way as I adore Nancy but I just want to see some more consistent characterisation from her. She was always kind, so that quality feels fairly consistent, but she was also a lot more prickly and temperamental when she first came into it and now that seems to have been forgotten.
I still don't understand how she won best newcomer
She's nowhere near being bland imo, far from it. She's got lots of charisma and I think that's part of the reason she's popular. The only time I really thought she was any different to how she is now is the wedding episode. She's still quite feisty at times. Do her wrong or mess with her family esp Johnny, and she'll show it. She loves them all to bits.
Maddy won because she is very popular.
No I don't think she's bland either but I think she could go that way if they don't give her a bit more fire in her belly. I haven't really seen any scenes recently where she's been particularly feisty and that's what I don't want, for her to slip into the role of the patient, overlooked middle child. If she gets a storyline where she's allowed to act a bit more like she did at the start I'd really like it as I don't like it when aspects of a character's personality is forgotten.
Completely agree.
Nancy had the potential to be an improved version of granny Shirley...impulsive, outspoken and, as you say, prickly. Now she is far too nice and saintly. This doesn't make for a good character.
i f they went down the route of her being gobby all the time, then her charcater would have to stay gobby forever. This is the problem with the characters Kat and Alfie;
Kat had been a gobby tart all her life and so she is now stuck into having to always wear the leopard print and fur and shout her mouth off all of the time.
Alfie had always been a quirky, clown, which is why after the baby swap storyline and the loss of the pub, his character now seems redundant and the writers are now scraping the barrel for storylines for him and his wife. i.e Bert and Ernie.
Long Live Nancy Carter - argulably the best character in the show at the moment played by one of the best actresses to ever grace the show in my opinion.
Well said! Completely agree.
Also, this is random but she reminds me of Zoe Carpenter from Hollyoaks, who was played by Zoe Lister. Again a character with so many layers. Maybe that's why I like Nancy so much.
Thanks.
I like that they've set her character up to be able to go in many different directions, which is very realistic unlike other characters whose paths are clear cut and set in stone.
I presume her moment will come next year when the other C stuff has transpired.
I don't think she's lost a spark in the sense that Maddy Hill is brilliant and brings that spark to the role without even trying. I'm just questioning the writing and consistency at the moment. But maybe it's a bit unfair as we know so little of Nancy that it's hard to tell whether she's being written consistently or not.
I suppose my main issue is that I really want to see a storyline that reveals a bit more about her inner psyche and doesn't just relegate her to this background character. You're right, she definitely needs her own storyline.
I hope the writers rethink that and let her do something on her own - love her and want to learn more about WHY she was so set on winding her family up by getting married!
I like what they've done with Nancy, she's still gobby and opinionated but much more down to earth now, which I think has been a realistic development as she's moved in with her family. I much prefer this than if she stayed as the chav that married a man she knew for 5 minutes in tracksuits.
Why does she need to be a role model? Is that in her job description or something?
I didn't ever see her as a chav, regardless of that wedding. It made me smile as it was such an extreme way for her to annoy her mum and she seemed to know exactly what she was doing. I just feel like she's now lost some of the bite she had back then which is a shame as I don't like when characters are watered down too much. I'm not saying I want her to be an over the top stereotype of a gobby young woman but I would like her to have more of an identify instead of just slipping into a passive role where the writers aren't really considering her personality, flaws and all.
I just want to reiterate that I really am a big fan of Nancy and I didn't create this thread to criticise her. I just want to see a bit more from her; what she's all about and what makes her tick.
Yeah it's definitely better that way. Maddy Hill is coming across as a great actress so far. It'll be great to see her with her own storyline.
The wedding made you smile?
I'm aware it's a TV show and all and we all love a good bit of entertainment, so stuff like this needs to happen but judging by the way you put it you seem to favor what she did as an idea in general?
You favor the idea of a girl getting MARRIED for a joke just because it annoyed her mother? This is why marriage is considered a joke now, and I think if you admire what Nancy did in any way then you need to check over your moral views...
I get what you're saying, I suppose she has fallen in to the back of the Carter dynamic but TBH I like that at the moment. The way I see it is we're supposed to be wanting Nancy to be given more storylines. I know you may disagree but the majority of viewers I think would have disliked Nancy at first, so why shove a character nobody likes to the forefront of the show? By taking her a step back, letting her blend in, gradually making her more down to earth, we like Nancy. She's a character we now want to see more of as we consider her a part of the show. I think she still very much has her feisty side, but she has realistically grown a softer, maturer side to her as well which makes her a more likable character.
"Real scum"? And you're telling me I need to check my moral views? Okay...
There are some horrible, horrible people in the world. A young woman doing something rash like deciding to get married does not make someone scum. A little bit selfish, yes, a little bit silly, sure, but scum? Nope, not even close.
And yes, the marriage that never happened did make me smile. It was just a humorous way of introducing us to her character, showing us her rebellious side but also he closeness to her dad and her brother. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously and it was quickly dealt with.
Anyway, I'm sure I've had this conversation with you before so it's obviously something you're quite hung about. I'll leave it there.
As for Nancy's more recent portrayal, I agree it's great that we've seen her softer side but all I'm trying to get across is that's all we've seen recently. I want her to be a rounded character who isn't just there to act as the calming voice in her family. She's a feisty, wonderful young woman with a good heart but I love the fact that she came in with a prickly side and I'd hate to see that disappear completely. All I want is more 'oomph' from her right now!
Fantastic post, completely agree with everything you've said on this thread re. how she's portrayed.
