"What would have done before the internet was invented" and other nonsense people say

Does anyone find this infuriating?

When people say things to me like "Well what would you have done before the internet was invented" I always feel like saying "WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE IF YOU HADN'T HAD A NICE HOME AND HAD TO LIVE IN THE AGES OF CAVEMEN?". Society develops, stop living in the past. *rant over*

It doesn't infuriate me at all. People coped perfectly well without mobiles too.

Doesn't annoy me in the slightest. Mainly because it's a fair point - the internet's a tool, not a crutch.

Complaining about somebody telling you that you have first world problems is like the Inception of first world problems. It's a first world problem within a first world problem

    Hyperbole much?

The question does stink of a straw man argument for people who have lost a debate.

Thing is the answer to all these "can you imagine what it would be like without the internet" etc is always going to be we wouldn't have known any different because if the things didn't exist to start with we wouldn't know about them to miss them.

Some of us have lived the majority of our lives "without the internet";-)
Believe me though, life is a lot better with it!:D

People got along perfectly fine before lightbulbs, doesn't mean we should stop using them though.

Some of us can actually remember not having Internet.... It was last week, when my pay-as-you-go router ran out....

Yes, there is a tendency with some to resist change and to always see it as a negative.
We are likely to see many life altering technologically based changes in a relatively short space of time in the near future.
Some of these changes are likely to happen so quickly that the past will be irrelevant in that we will have nothing comparable to measure it against. It is possible that we will need to adapt and to adapt quickly if we are to survive.

I must admit, I've never had anyone say that to me. Then again, they'd only need to take one look at me and realise that I'd be able to explain to them exactly what I did before the internet! :D

I do think it's a bit of a stupid argument. The same as people who say "we coped perfectly well without mobile phones".

Well, at one time we coped perfectly well without fridges or cars or electricity or even houses. It doesn't mean we should all go back to sleeping on the floor of caves and walking everywhere or riding on horseback.

It's a silly argument usually used by technophobes.

I grew up without the internet or mobile phones, I didn't have the internet at home until I was at university (and that was terribly slow dial up) and I didn't have a mobile phone until I was 18 and at uni either and that was just a Nokia 3310 so did very little. Thankfully technology develops and we have super fast internet and highly useful multi-function smart phones and they make life a hell of a lot easier.

Sure life's easier now with modern technology. But the "what did you do before the internet" argument isn't used by technophobes (well, not usually, anyway), it's used by those who get impatient with people who can't do a thing without modern conveniences. Use them, by all means (I do), but live without them if you have to.

I remember when you had to read books to research your homework and write all your findings down into notebooks with a pen. If you made spelling and/or grammatical errors, the book would be returned to you with them all underlined or encircled with red ink. I suppose all you have to do these days is Google the question and then copy and paste the answers into a file.

It's quite amusing to look back at how innocent we were when it came to porn, This was back in the days when women still had pubic hair and the ultimate aim was to get hold of a battered (or sticky) copy of Whitehouse, which was always ruder than the rest, but unbelievably tame compared to some of the stuff that's now only a few clicks away.

When it comes to mobile phones, I often think they cause at least as many problems as they solve. I wish I'd had one when I had my first cars though, which were almost guaranteed to break down at some point during a twenty mile journey.

On the other hand, I don't want to be contactable all the time, especially when somebody phones up simply because they're bored. I want to go out for a walk in the countryside without that pocket pest interrupting me, so I tend to keep it switched off most of the time.

I like to go online at home and leave it behind as soon as I walk out of the door. I definitely don't want to hear music playing as I'm walking along and I couldn't care less what trivial things other people might be getting up to.

I hate to see groups of people walking along together, all with their heads down, looking at their phones. That's when modern life truly is rubbish.

Ah <nostalgic smile> Whitehouse. Takes me back...

I well remember before we had DVD's, video recorders, TV, Washing machines, Refrigerator's, and hot running water.

We listened to the wireless, sitting in front of a roaring fire toasting crumpet's. :p

I HATE the thought of the pre-internet world!!! >:(

Even though I existed in it happily enough - I'd never want to go back there :o

I get majorly pissed-off when our internet goes down and don't give a shit if the cable's on the blink :D

I live in exactly the right era for my likes and interests.

'Life' is not any easier with the Internet just differently difficult.

But I do find it a great cure for boredom or for procrastination.

I agree. There are lots of people (especially kids) who are obsessed with technology and that isn't a good thing. Everything in moderation and all that..
