Is it a lot? And does it depend largely on selling alcohol? I mean for the average smallish shop with a regular clientele that isn't struggling.

Depends on their sales and profit margins.
If you were to go for a businesses for sale kind of website, I think it often tells you how much profit they make in a year.
Usually turnover not profit...big difference.
Well I just checked and quite a few listed their profit. Granted, the majority were saying it was available on request only.
What sort of profits were they making?
Some as low as £25k, some as high as £90k.
Then there were some vague ones that either used "upto" in their figures or listed a range.

Would have to be some offy to make £90k a year, must be huge. I imagine lots of the profit figures don't include any salary paid to the owner either.
Several of them doubled up as video shops which have also died a death so the booze side died with them.
Most Off Licences are dying out, I think in my town there isn't one, but we've just got a "Bargin Booze", shudder!!
Does it? Open from 11am to 11pm every day of the week plus having to be up early to take in deliveries and stock up all for very little profit. Not getting upstairs until nearly midnight then up again in 9 hours to do it all over again. Having to deal with tramps, alchies, winos and having to watch out for underage drinkers and gangs of youths hanging around outside every night and being under surveillance by the police to make sure you're not serving someone you shouldn't be.
No thanks!
Exactly, well said, sitting in an office on £25K pa pretending to work while posting on Twatter or DS all fecking day , now THAT beats running a corner shop 12 hours a day 24/7.
So, presumably, there must be a fair bit of money to be made.
Are we?
That's not the definition of an off licence, according to wikipedia.

There aren't many shops around these days that sell just alcohol and related products, as it simply doesn't make business sense.
Thank you. You've just proved my point
No we're not, we are talking about off licenses in general, read the thread title.
If you were making good money would you work 24/7 and unsociable hours? Most of these small shop owners don't have loads of staff and are mostly run by family who help out. Has it ever occurred to you that they need to open so many hours so they can take enough money in order to make a living? I'm sure if they were raking it in they wouldn't be having to work until 1am.
Who said anything about raking it in.
How would you expect me to know about these peoples finances or how much they pay their staff, who they employ and whether they are relatives or not. There are so many unknowns. One of the shop owners near me rents out property and has a restaurant in addition to the convenience store. Without asking them, I have no idea how much money they are making from the store itself. And let's face it, it would be rude to ask and I'm not their accountant or the tax man.
So why did you say in your previous post "there's a fair bit of money to be made" if your now saying you have no idea?
For all you know the reason they might have to stay open so many hours is so they can make ends meet. All I know is, if I was running a lucrative business that made a "fair bit of money" I certainly wouldn't be slogging my guts out for over 12hrs every day staying open till nearly midnight and having to get up early in the morning doing a 7 day a week job.
