I know you said one, but I just couldn't choose - if I had to make a CD, I'd go for...
1. What Difference Does It Make? - The Smiths
2. Move It - Cliff Richard & The Shadows
3. Are You Gonna Go My Way? - Lenny Kravitz
4. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
5. Street Spirit - Radiohead
6. Heroes - David Bowie
7. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'n' Roses
8. Beat It - Michael Jackson
9. Place Your Hands - Reef
10. Song 2 - Blur
11. Motorcycle Emptiness - Manic Street Preachers
12. The Riverboat Song - Ocean Colour Scene
13. You Really Got Me - The Kinks
14. Zombie - Cranberries
15. Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
I've deliberately left out metal, Beatles and Rolling Stones as they'd hog it a bit.
Forgot about Gimme Shelter. How could I? It's right up there. Keith was off his tits for most of the 60s and 70s but he was pretty damn productive nevertheless!

That's just an example though, I couldn't name one best riff.
If I had to choose one Opeth riff, although in reality that is impossible, that really sticks out it would have to be the end of Reverie/Harlequin Forest, from @ 9 min 58 onwards.
I've seen them do this many times live and they absolutely nail it every time, phenominal musicianship.
Interesting our "favourite" bits are nearly 10 minutes in to each track!!

You're right, it is impossible, they write so many awesome riffs. I know which bit you mean, I've always loved that bit too, and it's odd time signature.
I also really love some of the riffs halfway into 'Wreath', the intro to Godhead's Lament is insane, and Blackwater Park, The Grand Conjuration, the second half of Face of Melinda... Ok now I'm just naming songs, and I'd probably just end up naming 90% of them, so I'll stop
Never thought I'd ever see the mighty Pink Fairies mentioned on here!!
If all the people who I've met who claimed to have been in The Pink Fairies actually were, they must have got through several hundred members in the band's lifetime.

For the first minute the guitar riff is just on the very brink of falling apart, and then at 1:09 it all clicks into place. It's glorious.
Sounds a bit like Franz Ferdinand when it gets going...
The intro to this is the most devastating riff I know...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzkXGIRaxcI

Another one that's great to play is Gary Hoey's Stack Attack.
Had difficulty finding it on youtube, here's part of it:

I'd agree with a good portion of that.
George Thorogood 'Bad to the Bone'
Dr Feelgood 'Going Back Home'
T.Rex '20th Century Boy'
The Kinks 'You Really Got Me' or 'All Day and all of the Night'
Bo Diddley 'Bo Diddley' where The Stones got their riffs? 'Not Fade Away'
Maybe the greatest? John Lee Hooker 'Boom Boom'
Teenage Kicks - The Undertones
Blister on the moon - Taste (actually a whole series of riffs)
From The Nursery - Wire (one of the few riffs that I can actually play)
Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Day Tripper & Ticket to ride - The Beatles
Action, Time, Vision - Alternative TV
Supernaut - Black Sabbath
Fiction Romance - Buzzcocks
Sweet Dream - Jethro Tull
Shot By Both Sides - Magazine (actually the same riff as Lipstick by the Buzzcocks)
City Kids - Pink Fairies
Cherub Rock - Smashing Pumpkins
