One notch above Rose, but the lowest of the Moffat era and the lowest since 2006?
There are plenty of overrated and underrated episodes on that scale, but I can't help but think that DB doesn't quite belong where it is. But - let the adjustment and inevitable debate commence.
That's a bit of a worry ahead of episode 2. But I've learnt that the AI seems a bit random. Hopefully people will still tune in next week.
They are quoting the peak not the average. That said, it's nice to see the media not opting for the "ratings crisis" angle. When Smith's debut aired the media made unfavourable comparisons with Rose and The Christmas Invasion overnights, in spite of it topping 8 million in overnights in its own right.
Even the Daily Mail isn't going for ratings crisis. What madness is this?
A peak of 7.3 million viewers - and an average 6.8million - tuned in to the BBC1 show - which was also played simultaneously at 440 cinemas in Britain, with cities in America, Australia and New Zealand hosting simultaneous broadcasts.
The episode achieved a 32.5 per cent share of the audience. Its nearest rival, Casualty achieved only 4.2 million but overnight figures are considered increasingly unreliable as many people now watch television on catch up services such as iPlayer.
Ouch... that AI is a bit low.
Let's hope Into the Dalek proves more popular.
AI's are strange anyway. I think the slight dip probably reflects the fact that perhaps Capaldi hasn't quite won over some people yet. I think he will though in the next few episodes.
Was it Capaldi or the story that got it an AI that low (compared to other DW episodes)?
Almost certainly Capaldi. There have been episodes which a lot of people hate (Rings of Akhaten for example) which have received higher AI's
I don't think this is because Capaldi was bad, I think it was because the episode didn't quite give him the chance to shine and prove to the audience that he is the Doctor as much as The Eleventh Hour did for Matt.
Actually I suppose this means the lower AI is because of both. It's not Capaldi himself, but the way he was written in the story, if that makes sense.
I have no doubt that he'll win audiences over in the coming episodes now that he's calmed down and not acting all manic and crazy.
Wouldn't go so far as to say worrying, but a little disappointing. It's always going to be tricky with a new Doctor replacing someone loved in the role (which Matt was, on the whole, imho,), regardless the calibre of the actor.
To me, I think it emphasises what a great job was done with The Eleventh Hour, an even tricker proposition, but I think it's a hard thing to repeat.

I suppose it is easy to misjudge the score. While it is unusually low for DW on the whole, it's still a good score.
For added context, it should be added the BBC average is something like 81/82 for all it's output. I think the average for drama is higher than that though.
A I said, it is a little disappointing but not to a worrying extent.
That AI is definitely on the low side for DW. It's average for the BBC whereas DW is normally above average. It's the lowest AI since Love and Monsters and is basically on par with what series 1 would getting.
I suspect it's a mixture of people not taking to 12 as quickly as his predecessors (because he certainly isn't as instantly likeable) and people tiring of Moffat's DW a little as well as the extended running time feeling a bit too much.

You don't think that applied even more to Smith replacing Tennant?? I think people forget the Tennant hysteria that was around at the time. It was IMO a far more difficult job than replacing Smith with Capaldi. It's what made 'The Eleventh Hour' such a triumph.

That certainly puts it into perspective. The almost universally despised 'Rings of Akhaten' got an AI of 84. I'm quite shocked at that low figure for 'Deep Breath'.

So no ratings crisis or BBC-bashing from the Mail.
The world has gone mad.
Me too... These AI figures are just weird lately!
"We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto."
Pleasantly suprised as had predicted the annual ratings crisis stories on another thread. Maybe next week, eh?
(hope not, obviously.)
Was it Capaldi or the story that got it an AI that low (compared to other DW episodes)?
Have to wait and see what the scores for the next couple of weeks are.

I don't think it was Capaldi, i think he is the only thing to come out of the episode with universal praise.
I'm going with the story length, and the slow pace... For me and those on my TTL it did seem to take it's time to get going and it did drag.
Well that's my theory for the low AI.
Having been a naughty boy [having seen the leaked episodes] The action really starts, and i expect to to see the AI's pick up.
To me, I think it emphasises what a great job was done with The Eleventh Hour, an even tricker proposition, but I think it's a hard thing to repeat.
