Does anyone else think that Kate Bush was fantastic in the early days when she would hit the high notes with songs like Wuthering Heights and Wow, but after Running Up That Hill, her songs weren't so strong. It's like she lost her vocal range. I mean why do an awful cover of Rocket Man?
1 The Kick Inside (the first and best, very consistent, I liked the lesser known songs straight away)
2 Hounds of Love (the most famous and a solid effort, obviously you have to accept the bigger 80s production which being an 80s person I can)
3 50 Words for Snow (which was a big comeback album, much much more consistent than Ariel)
Obviously there are other good songs off other albums too.
Everyone's going to have differing opinions on that. I personally think Hounds of Love was her best album but much prefer Ariel to 50 Words for Snow. I also loved her take on Rocket Man. I don't think she's so much lost her vocal range as acquired a different one but that happens to almost everyone as they get older. It's unrealistic for us to expect her to be able to reach those Wuthering Height's notes now even if she wanted to .. which clearly she doesn't.
I think it was maybe a conscious decision by Kate to change the way she sings, not necessarily an inability to sing a certain way anymore. She's still hitting high notes in The Sensual World and The Red Shoes albums, but just with a different technique. She has said that she inhabits different characters in her songs, so that would also go some way to explaining her early vocal style.
Incidentally, does anyone else think she sounds like Cyndi Lauper on tracks like Love and Anger? *ducks*
From her early stuff, I think The Wedding List is such a great song, and, more recently, I love Lake Tahoe and Misty from 50 Words.
Amazing stuff. 8 in the top 40 is staggering, but even more impressive is that all 11 she's ever released are in the top 50!
I'm not surprised. Even as a previous 'casual' fan who only had the Greatest Hits prior to this and who doesn't even have a ticket for the gigs I've found myself caught up in the general excitement!

She remade Wuthering Heights in a different style many years back anyway, it was obvious a long while back that some of the early songs had to be changed when sung in later years.
Apparently her record company pleaded with her to release a new greatest hits to cash in on the tour, but she refused.
Fiscally sound. Why put all your good stuff on a single album, when you can get people to buy the whole lot separately?
No doubt the greatest hits will come out in a year or so, when all the kerfuffle has died down a bit. Maybe it'll even coincide with the DVD of the live show (plus "extras" for the fans who attended, to make sure they buy it too).

Although, her first greatest hits album, The Whole Story, has stormed to number 6 so people are still buying all the other albums as well as that anyway.
As that greatest hits album only goes up to 1986 she will no doubt release a new one at some point charting her whole career. Im sure a dvd in time for christmas will be done too.
I'm a big KB and was lucky to see her in 1979 in Manchester.
Anecdote from then, She was singing Lionheart to a hushed audience and some d*ckh**d bloke shouted out "Get em off Kate", she visibly winced and carried on.
Anyway, enjoyed the BBC shows, but as always got irritated when they chose to show some miming performances (not I think WH or TMWTCIHE). Maybe the beeb couldn't find any, but I get very little from watching a mimed performance, regardless of the technical necessities of it.

On 'The Whole Story' do you mean? I didn't like it ... something was lost and it seemed mad not to put the original on the greatest hits. You become so familiar with the tracks that your ears pick up the differences straight away. Obviously live is different ... I'd be happy to hear her interpretation of it now but understand that she might not want to revisit.

'The Whole Story' could have used to a few extra tracks imo.

It was one track on a multi- artist tribute alb to Elton.

I prefer the original as well, but i suppose the later one wasn't bad if you are ready to hear an alternative.
A live performance is likely to have more edge perhaps, but you can always get people critical of lives too as they often think something isn't perfect sounding enough compared to a studio recording or differs too much from what they are used to.
Not surprised I didnt get a ticket for the live shows, every sleb under the sun mysteriously got hold of a ticket...............hmm................I was offered a ticket at £283 but declined. Perhaps someone with a ticket can film the show for me on their Iphone please? Suggest they stand thru the show on my behalf please to do the filming - Kate will love that.

As people are doing best album lists I'll do mine
1 The Kick Inside (the first and best, very consistent, I liked the lesser known songs straight away)

Excellent stuff, I really love the first three albums and will probably have to get them again.

Remaster all the original albums from master tapes, and add the appropriate B-sides and rarities from the period each album covers.
DVD of "Live at Hammersmith Odeon" (or Blu-Ray, not sure of the quality of the original source though), along with any usable unreleased material.
Live CD of her '79 concerts.
DVD with all her promotional videos & 'The Line, The Cross and The Curve'.
DVD with collected television performances and other live appearances.
