I don't see what really separates him from previous male contestants like Joe, Jahmene and Leon? They're vocalists but we all know how their careers turned out

Tbf to him, I think he's potentially more 'current' then any of those acts were when they won the show. It all depends on the material he's given. There's something more to his voice than there was to any of the other three, which I can see having slightly more appeal to other demos other than just the housewives/mums/grandmas.
I think he's a lock to make the Final 3, even before live shows start. However, for the sake of the show, I think they need a girl to win this year since Syco seem to be clueless with male winners.
I couldn't by any stretch of the imagination describe Leon as a vocalist. Joe has a really good career, so I don't see the point you're making there either.
What Paul seems to have is versatility from what I've seen so far, You can't buy that. That song was no easy sing, and post show, it would depend entirely on what material he gets to record as to whether it works out. Olly Murs has a pretty weak voice, put in some really out of tune performances on the show and look what happened there..
It does seem the the most important factor is still being 'fit' rather than being talented, sadly
The GBP is not exactly known for choosing the best in these shows.
This is true, you only have to look at the charts to realise that there aren't really any, bar one, slightly bigger male singers.
True
Olly had charisma, though.
The public got behind him last year, even though he didn't get through, and not for his looks. I think he is a potential finalist.
Exactly! All the fake soul stuff doesn't cover up the fact that he has zero personality or zero originality.
Last night seemed to be all about him and how good he thought he was. I didn't see any attempt to engage or entertain the audience at all
That's what I think too and as a result his is less likeable. It's clear he has been told to act more confidently but he's coming across as too confident and a bit smug. I think it's a shame that he has had to change his personality to fit the show, I don't really feel he is being himself as he was last year.
What a load of crap! And you can tell that Louis made a huge mistake last year because he looks so bloody uncomfortable every time that Paul turns up to sing
Louis did make a massive mistake last year and putting not putting him through because he wasn't ready was a load of bull. He just didn't fit in with Louis idea of the perfect pop star while Sam Callahan did.
Yes I brought Sam Callahan up but to be honest he was only there for his looks and the teen vote. He would have been better in a band rather than solo or not in the competition at all.
If Paul does make this years live shows I think it would be better for him not to win Because if he does well and comes in a good place I'm sure he would have no problem getting a record deal and that way he might be able to make his own music and have a say in what he does.
I'm watching the show now (I recorded it) and the way he sings the song reminds of Steve Brookstein. Steve had the same kind of soulful voice.
Doesn't Simon exaggerate - 'Louis nearly destroyed your life'. Disappointed, let down, but he was hardly destroyed :kitty:
I don't think his musical identity/artistry is very strong, in my opinion, or it doesn't come through when you're watching him. I guess it could all change throughout the Live Shows though so we'll have to wait and see.
Definitely not. I don't think Nicholas did either.
I like Paul a lot but to be honest last night I kept thinking how much I preferred James Arthur's performance of that song. I know he's an idiot but when James did it it was just much more 'wow'. But then it's early days so he still has time to improve and has the talent to do it.
