Anyone watch this documentary last night?

Very moving account of America's 'prisons within prisons' with inmates literally being driven insane by prolonged solitary confinement.
A higher proportion of America's population is incarcerated than any other country in the world. 80,000 of these prisoners are kept in solitary confinement.
It posed the interesting question of whether solitary confinent actually makes dangerous prisoners even more dangerous.

All that self harming reminded me of caged animals who are so distressed they chew off their own tails. Instinctively, solitary confinement seems very wrong, last night's programme did nothing to change my view.
I can understand the need to have it as a place to isolate prisoners after incidents, but it certainly seems that anyone staying for any length of time starts to lose the plot.
I can't really say that I have sympathy for the prisoners but Solitary just seems to make them worse and that can never be a good thing.
