As a child I was into S Club 7, Vengaboys, 90s Britney, Squa, Hear'Say, Westlife, B*Witched, Spice Girls, allSTARS, ABBA (yes I was introduced to them when I was about 7) and Eurovision.
As a teen I was into Britney, Liberty X, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Rachel Stevens and a few others I can't remember
Now I listen to a lot of different acts. I do listen to a fair bit of mainstream pop (Britney Spears is my favourite singer ) but I like looking for different music that isn't as well known in the mainstream and checking out different genres. In fact one of my favourite bands isn't even in the charts and you can't buy their CDs in the shops, only via the internet. If I like a song, I'll listen to it, regardless of which decade it was released. The internet helps a lot. I listen to a lot of European music as well as UK/US music.
Roughly:
Jefferson Airplane, then
Tyrannosaurus Rex, then
Grateful Dead, then
Hawkwind and Pink Floyd, then
Dr Feelgood, then
The Stranglers, then
Funkadelic/Parliament etc, then
Cocteau Twins
then I decided not to have favourites any more because the record collection was too vast to keep up. Still growing
T. Rex
Roxy Music
Dr Feelgood
Yes
The Velvet Underground
Stevie Wonder
Bob Marley
Donna Summer
The Sex Pistols
The Clash
Blondie
Gary Numan/Tubeway Army
Joy Division/New Order
Siouxsie and the Banshees
U2
Following that I was a big Blondie fan for a couple of years.
Then I got hooked on electronic music (now called synth pop) - in particular Tubeway Army / Gary Numan.
Then in my late teens I was mad about The Beloved (the original four piece indie pop band before they changed direction and had some hits as a house / dance duo).
George Benson
Stevie Wonder
Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes
Aretha Franklin
Quincy Jones
Earth, Wind and Fire
Chic
Marvin Gaye
Much of the Motown and Philadelphia labels output
Spice Girls and some of their solo music
Britney
Abba
Coldplay
Delta Goodrem
The Black Eyed Peas
Gwen Stefani
Maroon 5
Kylie
Atomic Kitten
Sugababes
Kelly Clarkson
Justin Timberlake
30 Seconds to Mars
i was obsessed with the spice girls. i was 5 years old when wannabe came out and 9 years old when they split and literally for that four years, my mum and dad nonstop either had to listen to their albums or had to endure a VHS of them on LOL. I remember sharing a bedroom with my sister and we both had half of the bedroom wall each to put any posters we want. Her half was something like ponies and rugrats posters and my half was completely devoted to the spice girls lol
then i was about 9 years old when i started noticing other music besides spice girls. i started listening to britney's oops i did it again album and started becoming a fan. Then i remember being about 11 years old and at the end of primary 6 we had a wee class party and a girl in my class brought in p!nk missundaztood album and i loved it. i can remember coming home and begging my mum to buy me it. then one night one of her live shows was on TV at a ridiculas time of like 20 past midnight. but it was a friday night so my mum and dad let me stay up and watch it. and the rest is history, bought cant take me home, loved that and 12 years on im still a MASSIVE fan of pink. lol still a britney fan too lol.
From the age of 10 (1998) to 26 (now), I'd probably have named these bands in succession as my "favourites":
Steps
The Cartoons
S Club 7
HearSay
Big Brovaz
Junior Senior
White Stripes
The Darkness
Scissor Sisters
Alphabeat
Scooter
For the last five years or so it's been the Pet Shop Boys.
It started off with disco music and funk then onto ska/reggae and then new romantic/new wave synthpop then a whole lot of Madonna and PSB, a touch of SAW, house music and Spice Girls, some Jay Z, Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse then Gaga and more to come!
Before I was a teenager, I wasn't that into music. Then I went to 'big school' made a couple of friends, one of whom gave me a lend of his Queen CD which I promptly copied to tape. It was only a greatest hits CD but that was it, I was hooked and branched out from there.
Queen were definitely the dominant sound of my teen years.
Comments
Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Aerosmith, Guns n Roses, the Doors, U2
I'd like to say my taste has improved but I can't lol
