Dancers bigger celebrities than the celebrities?

What do you think?

It's like there are all these actual celebrities who appear on a primetime BBC show, having to perform with a bunch of nameless losers from the soaps, reality TV and niche sports.

Right?

    Definitely.

I know all the dancers from previous years but seldom know of more than one or two of the so-called celebrities.

I have no knowledge of soap or current pop singers / musicians - other than salsa and tango ;-)

Nope. If you put Strictly dancer into another show, maybe Celebrity Big Brother, they might not seem like a particularly big celebrity at all.

Before Strictly started, only people who were dancers themselves and active in the international dance world would ever have heard of any of the professional dancers that the rest of us are familiar with now, just because of Strictly.

I know that every series of Strictly I find that I have never heard of some of the celebrities. But I know who some are. I presume everyone can say the same.
But if you stuck fifteen professional dancers in front of my nose who aren't on Strictly, I'd not know one of them.

Strictly is responsible for the pro dancers now being celebrities outside of the dance world, so it's not really fair comment to say they are bigger celebrities than the amateurs. If Strictly hadn't been invented, any of the amateurs we see on there would still have some sort of mainstream celebrity status. The dancers wouldn't.

I am sure somebody can come up with the ratings of Strictly versus that of the soaps in which the soap stars perform to establish relative name recognition.

To some extent. But I don't think it's true in any uniform way across the board and it's not going to be the same group of 'nameless losers' for everyone watching. If people have enjoyed the soap or the drama or are engaged in the sport, bought the single, adore reality TV, or love that moment the wayward echidna did whatever on film etc that's bound to make a difference.

Not sure rugby and tennis are niche sports exactly! :o

Could say the same about EastEnders, Casualty, Coronation Street etc.

I think it depends how you gauge celebrity. Is it general name recognition, twitter followers, their past career? (just a few examples)

Not for long on this show.

The BBC don't like it, so they've got rid of some, I expect more to go next year.

That's true. Very strange. SCD is much their show as is EastEnders or Breakfast. And the same can be said for the respective stars.

Lisa Riley is a regular on panto apparently Was she before SCD?

I think that's only the case for us fanatics who could name all the pros ever to have danced on the show. Ask an average member of the public who Brendan Cole is, and they probably won't have a clue. Ask them who Judy Murray or Max Branning from EastEnders is, and they're much more likely to know.

    Not really.

Because any reasonable actor in any of those programmes will have been in something else before and will be in something else after.
The pros on Strictly are only famous to the mainstream because of Strictly.
They weren't in anything else on telly before and they wont be in anything else on telly after.

You are such an old cynic Doghouse. :p:)

But I have to admit that it has crossed my mind too that the dancers get 'retired' when their celebrity starts to outshine the celebrities.

Anton and Brendan are the two biggest names - bigger than most of this year's celebrities.

    Cynic?

    Moi?

I tell it as I see it.

I know they have a "finite SCD life" anyway.

I mentioned Darren and Lilia "got too big" years ago.

and a couple of my favourites, I know it was seven years ago.

Perhaps some of the newer ones will grow on us.

Gary Lineker wasn't much good at anything but football; Sue Barker was only known for tennis; and Clare Balding was associated with horses. They were all BBC people at The Olympics.

The pros should be looking to diversify and certainly get on stage like Vincent & Flavia.

I have heard of Darren and Lillia and also of We' We' We' but couldn't name any of the group's members or recognize them or any of their music.

Lisa was in Emmerdale for 6 years, presented You've Been Framed for 4 years and was in Waterloo Road too. She's also done theatre work (apart from panto). Even though I didn't watch the shows she was in, I'd say she's quite a well known actress. :)

Nonsense the most famous dancer is Anton and always has been. Even having his own non dance shows. Darren and Lilia were dull and that was their only crime.

The series when Lilia, Matthew, Darren and Ian were effectively dropped proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the general public couldn't give a monkeys about the pro dancers. This forum is a bubble.

Brendan does already, he tours each year and his shows are very enjoyable. I'm sure that I have seen others do various other shows and workshops. End of last season, a lot of the SCD Pro's were back in Burn The Floor, and Karen & Kevin were touring with Flashmob, which was amazing.

Nope. Don't agree. If you watch the quiz Pointless, contestants have struggled to name pro dancers. It is the celebs they remember. Exception to this is Anton, which is probably why they keep him. (People like us, who recognise all the dancers, are not the norm.)

It's certainly true that if it wasn't for Strictly, the pro dancers would be unknown to a large portion of the non-dancing viewers.

But you could say the same about the celebs - to someone who never watches soaps, a lot of the celebs who've are/have been in Strictly are totally unknown to me. Sunetra, Jennifer, Jake? Never heard of them. Nor Tim, Scott or Thom for that matter.

In other words, someone you've heard of is going to be seen as a bigger celeb than someone you've never heard of.

In the case of Brendan, that seems unlikely if people kept their tv on BBC1 the whole Saturday night (not that big an ask).

I would bet Pointless - or the surveys they use- are a good guide to who is popular.

Katya got dumped just after she was a "Pointless" answer.

They don't want the dancers to score too high - but on the other hand they do not want zero recognition.
