Why is it so many singers seem to think they've got to pull a series of ridiculous faces when they sing? Some are so off putting I find myself not listening to the singing!

Now some people overdo the face pulling which I admit, affects the enjoyability of watching the performance. It is not a hard thing to overcome, I think Simon was spot on with this comment to Andrea.
People simply will always make facial expressions when singing, if they don't then they are not singing with enough emotion. People like Andreas must however, control it a bit, start singing in front of a mirror and all will come good.
But the gurning that many seem to insist on seems a fairly new phenomenon! Look back 15 years plus and it didn't happen with such regularity!
Jay is always squinting I wish someone would buy him some spectacles.
lol true
I think its called being "intense" or being "in the moment".
Much like when your doing a no.2
Oh no - did i just go there?
I actually loled!!!! You did go there indeed!
You shouldn't need to convey emotion by pulling facial expressions only, you should be able to hear it come through in their voice, when someone talks you can tell by their tone of voice what they're feeling so it should be the same singing, if you listen to pink without watching, you can hear what she is feeling anyway but I suspect it would be harder to tell with some of the contestants this year. You can also see sadness in someones eyes too and a lot of actors can portray a lot of emotion with a subtle look and a subtle facial expression, you don't need all this over the top scrunching up the face, bending over in pain clutching your heart crap.
Agreed
