Shoshana Roberts spent 10 hours walking through New York to raise awareness of the kinds of unsolicited comments, catcalls and intimidation women can face everyday, with the resulting clip earning more than one million views on YouTube.

Apparently street harassment is a very common thing in New York City and the clip is quite unsettling.
The video is backed by the non-profit organization Hollaback!, which seeks to end street harassment around the world but Shoshana is now facing more harassment online – in the form of rape threats, accusations of racism and suggestions she should have ‘smiled back’.
Many of the comments like “Hello,” or “Have a nice day,” seem innocuous but the frequency of the remarks was astounding and I can understand how she would feel demeaned and sometimes threatened.

Men are stupid ..
It is kind of intimidating and especially if she's on her own.
I'm thinking if I was in the situation I'd feel flattered, but I guess it gets wearying on a continual basis.
I bet it is. If I was a woman with a big butt and breasts and I didn't want to feel intimidated I wouldn't walk around on my own wearing leggings and a tight top, but that's just me.
I suppose it you'd like to distill it down to "It's just hello", I can see why you think that. However;
it's a single woman,
wearing black normal clothing,
just walking and minding their own business making their way from point A to point B
without making eye contact or engaging anybody in communication, verbally or non verbally.
I don't believe that people walking down the street would really appreciate being stopped or engaged by somebody simply because they found them attractive.
I believe the point is to illustrate how many times a woman wearing jeans and a T-Shirt walking down a street, without making eye contact or encouraging communication actively - will be cat called. Obviously to illustrate the point - the woman is not going to engage. So her being "right bad mannered" is irrelevant.
For example "Smile" - Say what? "SMILE!" - If you think it's acceptable for a member of the opposite sex to demand that somebody minding their own business "SMILE" for their own appreciation is acceptable, then that's quite worrying.
Trevgo - are you a woman? I suggest that if you're not I would wager that you would probably also feel intimidated as well. Rather than just weary from the flattery.
So if you were a woman you would not
Walk around on your own,
in jeans and Leggings,
in case somebody might find you attractive.
Can I recommend a holiday to Saudi Arabia?
Not if I was intimidated by people saying 'hi, have a good evening' or 'smile'
I'm all for people making a point, but it's hardly groundbreaking. Hot woman in skimpy clothes gets attention from men
She's also walking like a robot, not sure what that adds to the experiment
By the way, the winner in this video is the bald guy on the phone who just says 'NICE'
One cat call every 6 minutes. Not that shocking.:o
Smile Rupert. Lets have a photo of you on this forum now, smiling.
It's not groundbreaking - it's illustratative.
In your opinion. Does she need to be told this?
Jeans and a T-Shirt. What casual clothing would you suggest she wear?
Gets cat called by men.
I saw a programme on harassment in Cairo, women in full burkas getting incredibly offensive comments, and men with erections rubbing against them on crowded buses and groping them.
Yeah, women, stop your moaning, rupert has the obvious solution - wear unsexy baggy clothing and walk around with a chaperone at all times! Duh!
Indeed. Makes you wonder what it would be like in Mumbai or Delhi. I'm sure that they should be glad of the "attention".
They certainly weren't shouting 'how you doing' to the men walking along.
Twice men actually stalked her, do you know how scary that is? Believe it or not, it's scary just getting the greetings/cat calls, cause you never know when ignoring them will lead to something less seemingly pleasant.
Why not just NOT shout at women in the street, or ogle them, or tell them they are miserable if they don't acknowledge you?
You think? There have also been rape threats on YouTube.
Would he feel intimidated by women catcalling him, fear of the next step being something physical if he didn't acknowledge them?
