Some people seem to be getting really offended that some other people were offended.

People foaming at the mouth over a card in Clintons is beyond parody. It is almost redundant to even make fun of these people. Wait until they go on the internet and see what is on there!
All the 'foaming' I can see is from people trumpeting away about the dreadfulness of someone not liking this card. Obviously we all have a fundamental human right to buy this particular card, no other card would possibly do, and anyone who suggests Clinton might stop promoting it is EVIL. There is obviously far, far less 'foaming' among those who dislike the card; their tone is mild and reasonable.
People that complain to shops and try to force them to their will and stop selling stuff they do not like are just selfish a*shol* as other people do like it would like to buy it .who they think they are trying control what others buy.if they are offended by it simple answer is do not buy it.
if i ran a shop i tell the moaning morons
" if you don't lke it dont buy it"

If you ran a shop, you would be at liberty to carry what stock you please and to address customers as you choose. So are Clintons. So is any shop owner.

And that's often because they're very defensive of their primitive views.

Clintons have had joke cards for years taking the piss out of all members of society. Why should people who live on council estates be let off?

Thought this was gonna be about Bill and Hillary, following on fast on the heels of the Blair's bizarre offering.

    Disappointed. :-(

I'm so relieved you said that. I too assumed it was a Bill and Hilary thread and I started reading it as such. I took a little bit too long to realise it was about the card shop

Just to knock a few of your assumptions on the head, I live in social housing, I'm not poor, my neighbours aren't poor either, two work off shore on rigs in the North Sea, the rest mostly have work a day jobs such as Tesco, the local biscuit factory, a nursery school teacher and waiter in an Indian resteraunt, all own cars and go on holiday, eg Spain, USA, Far East, and also I wasn't the least bit bothered by so called 'offensive' card.

Good post. I was going to reply to a couple of posts referring to 'poor people' but you've saved me the bother.

Personally I find this assumption - and some of the posts condemning the card - much more offensive and patronising than the card itself.

Believe it or not a lot of us from council estates are not ashamed of it so we're not too precious to have a laugh about it.

Poor people have a sense of humour and can laugh at themselves , it's more likely people get offended on our behalf>:(

But that argument could and has been reversed.

You don't like it, so ban it.

There are some dangerous precedencies with that.

Actually, whereas the card was dismally unfunny, I did laugh out loud at the main protester. She is so absolutely, 100%, the worst nightmare of the Daily Mail etc. http://lse.academia.edu/LisaMckenzie A sociology lecturer at LSE who specialises in class divisions and council estate life, she would cause mass rupturing of blood vessels just by crossing their line of sight. :D

Actually I have now started reading one of her papers: http://www.academia.edu/7993914/The_stigmatised_and_de-valued_working_class_the_state_of_a_council_estate - and can confirm that she was unlikely to have been responsible for that Clintons card. The people on the estate where she did her fieldwork don't seem to like being laughed at like that:
    Mandy

‘it’s like people looking in I mean it’s when you’ve heard it on the telly about the gun crime and everything I mean my friend she actually made a complaint the other year cos she went to a pantomime at the Nottingham Ice Stadium and one of the people in the pantomime he turned round and said ‘oh I don’t want to go into St Anns cos we’ll get shot’ and they brought that into the pantomime and my friend actually made a complaint about it’

    Lisa

    &

so they actually made a joke and other local people in the audience could laugh at it’

    Mandy

‘yeah but for us that’s not funny’

    .

I bet all of this publicity has worked wonders for Clintons commercially.

Has anyone explored the possibility that, rather than this being some awfully regrettable faux-pas, it was actually a shrewd and calculated marketing move?

People that get offended need to just chillax and lighten up a bit.

and how many people who get offended would change their tune if something like a like was targeted to be banned.i would not want something they like banned as they like it and i would not want to take away something others like

Yes, some black folk find racist jokes funny, it doesn't mean everyone else has to, or that they're not offensive.

    Indeed.

Some people are far too easily offended at someone finding something offensive.
