I just wonder though, if Clara is a convenient way to save budget
Don't see Fearne being back at BBC Radio ever. 6Music and Radio 2 are just not fits for her. She'll make the return to TV, or make a go of fashion full time
I have some news to cheer you up.Alice Levine is sitting in for Fearne for 3 days next week (mon-wed)
I think Clara will be fine. She sounds great on the chart show, down to earth, enthusiastic, good personality and engaging. Cotton is pretty irritating and clearly ready to move onto the next stage of her life.
Strange that Alice has sat in so much yet hasn't been given Fearne's slot in May, she must be gutted. I'm just glad Gemma Cairney didn't get it, this must be the end of the road for her, she won't get Scott's slot.

Gemma was too old to get it, as she'll be 30 soon. Radio 1's big issue is by the end of this year all of their big names (Grimmy, Greg, Scott, Annie, Huw, Dev, Matt, Gemma) will be the wrong side of 30. So when vaccancies come up such as Feanre's they have to ensure an under 30 presenter goes in their to keep the station fresh and relevant to the target audience.
Scott's eventual replacement will be interesting, assume he stays there for a bit yet, Matt Edmonson is then too old to move to daytime, they really need to bring in some young (early 20s) presenters who will be the next daytime DJs, these DJs need Radio 1 experience first in either weekend slots or early breakfast.
Alice is now the obvious one to get a daytime promotion, which would free up a slot for someone new but I feel that Dev and Gemma need to go soon to clear some space for some younger talent.
The next breakfast host is also interesting Greg probably missed the boat as you need to be in your 20s when you start a breakfast stint and unless he gets it this year that won't happen. We're probably due another female breakfast host so maybe that's what Alice is being lined up for?

Although Alice isn't exactly young either she'll be 30 next year, so maybe too hold to be the next breakfast host too. Radio 1 have a real issue in that the only under 25 presenter I'm aware of is Dan of Dan and Phil, when will Radio 1 start hiring some young presenters again, they always used to give student Radio award winners a go, which is where Greg came from, but that now appears to have stopped.
Is Radio 1 now in danger of starting to age with it's audience who don't want to move on to Radio 2?

:cool:I don't feel so bad now reading this!
I'm amazed that all of these presenters are almost 30 or over, I wouldn't have thought that Greg, Matt and Alice were edging 30.
The playlisting and the scheduling are the main problem. The station sounds sluggish and that is not the fault of the presenters.

That's the issue apart from Alice and Clara no new daytime talent since Ben Cooper was promoted he's been too busy rejigging the schedule rather than focus on the next generation of presenters, this will bite him in a few years when he realises his demographic is full of 30 somethings again.
1Xtra appears to be the only breeding ground for new Radio 1 presenters now, don't listen to that but are there any younger presenters who could make the jump across? I'm aware of Charlie Sloth who's a few years under 30 but he's more of a Westwood specialist so not sure he'd get a daytime gig on Radio unless they want to go really urban but then wouldn't they be too similar to 1Xtra, although is a Radio 1/1Xtra merger the next BBC cost saving?
To be fair to Clara she had to be promoted to a big slot now, at 28 if they'd waited any longer sh'd have been too old.
Radio 1 in 5 years time will be interesting if they don't get any young presenters in soon there is going to have to be a 93 style chop where the ~35 year olds like Grimmy, Greg, Matt, Dev and Gemma all get axed, plus I'm sure Scott will be gone by then so you'll only have Clara left.

She's a good choice to replace Fearne. Alice is fine but too similar to Lauren Laverne on 6 in the same timeslot.
Where has this talk come from that presenters over 30 are an issue, weren't the likes if moyles, Vernon, Sara, Edith, Jo axed because they were more like pushing 40?

I quite like the idea of Alice in breakfast. Perhaps in a double act with Greg?
How about...

Was gutted about Zane leaving, as I've always enjoyed his enthusiasm as much as anything.
And Fearne has copped a lot of stick over the years, although I have no idea why - she always seems an absolute natural on the radio.
I did think that Grimmy might just be keeping the breakfast slot warm for Greg, but he's been there a while now.
The whole thing about the R1 age demographic annoys me though - I'm well out of their target audience, but still listen. There isn't really an alternative that I'd rather tune into.
Why they would rather have 10m listeners under 30, and no listeners over 30, than have 10m listeners under 30 plus 3m listeners over 30 I have no idea.
Did anyone hear Greg's cover of Fix You for Zane? Properly emotional.
Do the listeners really care how old the DJ's are? If so, that's laughably shallow.
No I don't think they do but BBC management believe older presenters like Moyles, Whiley, Cox retain older over 30 listeners which they are desperate to lose to lower the average listener age which is Ben Cooper's bonus target as set by the BBC Trust. Cooper makes money by axing older staff hence the number of firings he's made, his priority is to keep his bank account full (His £177,100 base salary is obviously not enough he needs the extra £7,800 the BBC pays him which is no doubt performance related) if that means ending the career of someone like Moyles then so be it.
No doubt if Radio 1's average listener age went up he would be at risk of losing his job so he's not going to risk £184,900 a year just to keep Moyles' career going.
Judging Radio 1's success by the average age of its listener seems the incorrect measurement to me - especially as a station for 15-29 year olds is going to get parents listening with their children in the car. Not to mention there being less of an age gap in music tastes these days.
To me the measurement should be the percentage of 15-29 year olds (or 15-24 if RAJAR's breakdowns don't allow easy measurement) they are reaching each week and how this compares to how other media reach this age group - not just the likes of Capital and Kiss but TV channels such as E4 and MTV.
I don't see a problem with older presenters as long as they have a style which can appeal and is of relevance to under 30s. Scott clearly does. As much as I am a fan of Chris Moyles I think his cultural references were getting to the borderline of being irrelevant to under 30s, particularly at the younger end.
I do think he could have had another 2-3 years of life on the network though maybe away from breakfast. Although maybe he left at the right time - still on the network's big show on a high - only really Mike Smith and to a lesser extent Zoe Ball had done that before him.
Alice Levine, Dev or Matt could take over Scott Mills show in May. That's what I'm hearing. An announcement could be made any day now. Ben Cooper is figuring out which one should get it judging by their recent stand in stints. Scott could take over the sunday chart with Clara doing an abbreviated version on her Friday show. That's the way it's starting to look.
Clara has done really well for herself. Its only a year or so ago she was doing Kiss afternoons as a duo with Michael Lewis. She came over to me as the junior partner with him at times seeming to carry her almost as if she was his apprentice.

- 8m under 30s (100% under 30)
than
- 10m under 30s plus 5m over 30s. (2m more listeners under 30, 7m more listeners overall. But only 67% under 30)
Which makes no sense at all.
So well done to Clara.
