Should we be concerned at this? its happening so often now its starting to feel like they are planning something.

It's because of Trident. If we unilaterally disarmed, then these fly-by's would cease immediately. Russia would feel guilty that we have done it, so will disarm too.

    PEACE

They have not entered our airspace.

It has nothing to do with Trident.

Even if we did not have that we would be protected by nukes.

No one will ever fire a nuclear weapon unless they are mad.

But it is OK for NATO to have troops and weapons on the Russian border?

They are continuing to push their luck though. What are they up to?

Just standard Russian Cold War tactics.

I wouldn't be too alarmed about it tbh

I think we are seeing the same western hypocrisy here. it was OK for the US to have nuclear warheads in Turkey pointing at the USSR but as soon as the Soviets did the same with the US in Cuba WW3 almost breaks out.

"Pushing their luck"? You make it sound as though Russia is an insignificant military power, rather than having 10 times the number of active nuclear warheads than we have. :D

They are up to the same games that NATO plays on their borders presumably.

True. The illegal deposing of an elected president and the country being run by dodgy politicians and far Right militia.

Not at all. Russia's just waving its dick. America does it all the time, too.

If you take our defence cuts and capability gaps into consideration, it's probably us who are pushing our luck.

So, worst case scenarios. in the event of Russia threatening to invade the UK; which would you prefer?

    1. Living under jackboot of evil Russian invading force.

    2. UK Population obliterated as country is reduced to a smouldering radioactive crisp.

I know which option I'd choose.

Using Trident would result in option 2, without question. So what's the point in having it?

    Its a deterrent.

Your much more likely to throw a punch if you won't get one back.

You've foolishly assumed that each scenario has an equal chance of happening. Without trident 1. Is much more likely to happen compared to 2. With.

Yeah because Russia will invade if we don't have Trident. Of course they won't.

What would Russia gain by invading the UK?

They know that we possess god-knows-how-many chemical and biological weapons, of course. Even without these, they know we could screw their country up in so many ways.

    So what would they gain?

I love how people go on about the nightmare scenario of UK not having its own nuclear warheads as if we would be the only country without one when in fact very few countries do. I wonder if they lay awake at night in Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Canada, Australia, Brazil etc etc dreading an impending invasion from a yet unspecified countries.

lets be clear UK having trident is all about pretending we are a big wig and having a seat on the security council. The biggest threat to our security was invading Iraq and helping grow extremism, nothing a redundant warhead can do anything about. .

Couldn`t possibly be anything to do with the expansionist EU casting its eyes in the direction of the Ukraine, could it ? We`ve already had one German chancellor wanting " living room in the East". Appears we may now have another. Didn`t turn out too good as history will recall.

Having Trident is just about British taxpayers paying for the "privilege" of the US putting its warheads on our territory.

We don't even have true independent control of them. When it comes to Trident, the US literally calls the shots.

""Nuclear deterrence is essentially aimed at states, because it doesn't work against terrorists. And you can only aim a nuclear weapon at a rational regime, and at rational states that are not already deterred by the US nuclear deterrent. "
