Daily Mirror: Doctor Who legend Sylvester McCoy says only a MAN can play the Time Lord.
Or should The Doctor remain 100% male forever?
So what do you reckon? Do you agree, or should The Doctor eventually change gender like The Master did?Doctor Who has been played by at least a dozen actors - but should never be played by a woman says Sylvester McCoy
Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy says the Time Lord should never regenerate as a woman.
The actor, 71, has dismissed suggestions the time traveller could be played by a female.
He said: “I’m a feminist and recognise there are still glass ceilings in place for many women, but where
would we draw the line? A Mr Marple instead of Miss Marple? A Tarzanette?”
Sylvester, the seventh doctor between 1987 and 1989, added: “I’m sorry, but no – Doctor Who is
a male character, just like James Bond. If they changed it to be politically correct then it would
ruin the dynamics between the doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show.

It has now been well established that Time Lords can indeed change sex.
The companion argument doesn't really hold water though, because a female Doctor with a male companion, or indeed with another female companion, would be very interesting if handled the right way, but it would be an enormous leap for many fans of the series to cope with.
ruin the dynamics between the doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show."
If it can have male companions and maintain the dynamic it can have female Doctors.
Don't think it's a mistake really as it has also been well established that humans can change sex.
"The Doctor is a legend woven throughout history... when disaster comes.. he's there... and so is she....he... or she... leaves a storm in his or her wake....."
I'd imagine it would be exactly like you've just written it if the Moff handled it. I'd worry that the Doctor's dialogue would suddenly go downhill though and he'd start slapping himself. HERSELF! Oh I'm doing it now! ;-)
Or maybe he just doesn't want to be out-done by a woman. I bet there are thousands of female actors out there who could have a far more successful tenure as the Doctor than mcCoy did; perhaps the thought of a woman being more successful than him in the same role is more frightening than a man doing the same.
Totally agreed! But should the right woman come along for the lead role, she can surely have it.
I don't think it'll be as big a leap as many fear it will be... there'll be a clear divide of support and criticism towards the idea, even before a female lead has been given the chance to show what she's capable of as an actress. I think the younger viewers will embrace the idea with a far more open mind than the older ones - generally speaking, though that's not a generalisation of everyone. You only have to see the way younger people reacted to Missy - or indeed anyone on the reaction videos on Youtube...a wide array of people from all over, and I don't think anyone there seemed to express disdain at the idea. Of course, changing the gender of the Doctor is a bigger step to embrace but I think if the actress can prove herself and once that initial uncertainty is out of the way that same, open-minded viewership won't bat an eyelid.
I'd love to see a small light-hearted joke like this inserted
I guess it'd be dealt with in the same way Capaldi's Doctor addressed The Master. Talking to Clara in the graveyard about his childhood friend he simply said "She's trying to tear the world apart," without any reference to the 'he' of the past. It'd be funny if they'd tried to inter-weave that though... "Now she's trying to tear the world apart....which is nothing new really, but she was once a he and I never had to deal with all this wibbly-wobbly, gender-bender prefix confusion on top of everything else. F*ckity bye!"
Two heads and no noses.
Or a dog's head with no nose.
Much too convenient this regeneration lark.
Increased chance of being ginger
Or if female, auburn.
She. The same way they would if they were writing about a transgender character's pre-surgery self. Simm's master is referred to as she in Death In Heaven.
If they picked a women just to change things when a better man auditioned I would be annoyed.
If they picked a man just to keep things the same when a better woman auditioned I would be just as annoyed.
I want the very best person to play The Doctor no matter of gender or race.
Can't believe an actor who has actually played The Doctor would make such a common mistake.

What a stupid thing to say..
Never before have I been a proponent of Mr McCoy. I have always damned him for playing a weak Doctor. But he got this right. he knows that age brings responsibility. he knows what will work or not work..
All those pushing for it like it was a feminist thing to say will be let down. The minute you allow feminist ideas into Doctor Who will allow the ruination of the programme..
Doctor Who was credited as Doctor Who for most the original run. He's only credted as 'The Doctor' from Davison onwards. It's not how the character identifies but it's how most identify the character.
