This is journalists lives now. They use the people freely willingly to get the people to bring the stories to them. People see the opportunity to make money from their photos and videos. People will do anything to get their footage on mainstream news.
Look at the weekend in Britain. A man with his daughter was running from the air show jet explosion. He then decided to stop and start filming with his smartphone. Any sane person would run and keep running to get their family to safety. Here we have the incentive to make money because it'll likely be a possibility to go viral on mainstream news and social media.
After all, what do all thew news channels say? Including American? Send us in your tweets, photos and videos. Sky News: Remember though, must be in landscape!
The media exploit and encourage anything to be reported. The people know it and look what happens. Lots of copycats.
I don't think people stopping to photo or video shocking events is really amongst the same social media culture as what this guy did.
What's scary is that he was so close to them and pointing a gun and the poor buggers were so focused on their job that they didn't see him. He clearly waited until the camera panned round to face her before he started shooting. The look on her face when she saw the gun
The fact that it was live TV would be a big factor. She would be really focussed on the interview and asking the right questions to the point that she wouldn't be aware of anything outside her bubble.
Looks like this git planned it to happen on live TV. Perhaps he was planning it for days or weeks and waiting for an opportunity to shoot her while she was live on TV.
With cameras still at the scene of the car chase, I guess the shooter hasn't been taken to hospital yet, which is possibly why there is still confusion about his condition.
That's why suggestions that if the tv crew had been armed, things may have been different. They were focused on the interview and unaware of the threat until too late.
exactly
bit like arming teachers
yes they might kill the nutter
but theyd also probably kill a few pupils as well
people have watch james bond/jack bauer etc too much on the TV and think they can take the baddie out with one shot
I actually hope he is alive and spends forever in prison for what he just did.
On another note these guns are the ones they just bought our armed forces for dealing with terrorist fanatics wielding AK-47's. She managed to get quite a distance away after being shot three times with I assume a Glock 9mm.
its the fact he had the forthought to record it with the intention to put it on Fakebook/twatter thats the new social media/narcissistic bit
like a lot of the current generation having to record there lives then post it on FB
as a form of validation thats so sad
Is it really any worse than the diary of Samuel Pepys or other famous diarists, some of whom certainly intended for their recordings to be made public (unlike Pepys). I think those that in the past would have kept a diary and even to this day are doing it in part for some sort of validation of their life.

Plus having his own camera to do his own POV footage. Then pause mid-flight to take time to upload that footage to Facepalm, YT, Twatter..

I'm sure psychologists would have a field day analysing this guy and his motivations. He clearly wanted as big an audience as possible for what he was about to do ie. making sure it happened on live television and even filming it himself just to make sure.
I'm not so sure the easy availability of guns in the US makes any difference in this particular case. If he was determined to kill these people, he would have found a way. The only difference is that it wouldn't have been broadcast live on tv.
It's not like the random killing of strangers, this appears to have been the result of a grudge. It was personal.

You could say that about most shootings that make news from America.

They know it'll be reported. Until the media change (and it'll never happen) this will keep on happening for future events.
Fair enough, I couldn't possibly have known that when I made the post, so I'll happily retract that part. It's not unusual for people to try and rationalise something senseless like this by jumping to "mental illness" though.
So why did you write it? You jumped to conclusions and tried to imply racism despite not knowing the facts. You can't retract that. You've just demonstrated your true colours and your own prejudices. Too bad, too late.
He supposedly had a GoPro on him? What else was he planning to do? He's getting all this coverage?
Well yes, his intentions were clear. What I disputed was that the social media generation inspires this kind of behaviour. His actions are of someone who is sick and wants notoriety. I don't think it can be lumped into a culture like that.

What America need to do with guns is what the UK have --ban them!

Yeah, that worked well. Only the bad guys have them. Knee-jerk reaction from politicians that will never admit they screwed that one up. Even Olympic shooters have to leave the UK to practice. Tax it or ban it is politicians motto.
I am late to the thread and just watched the shooters video and my question how on earth did they not spot him before he shots ? - he is just standing there and yet nobody heard him approach or saw the shadow of him .

True I mean back in 1987 American media seemed to think it was ok to show a man blowing his brains out in a press conference.

I have no idea what the world's coming to anymore. >:(:(

We have a narcissistic society now. They'll do anything to get a story.
