Doctor Who - discounting the first episode of the previous series as it had the added curious factor of a new Doctor, the rest of the series did an average just slightly higher than last nights. The second episode when it clashed with TXF had this
5.2 million - 24.7% share.
X Factor - 9.3 million, 42.3%
and for those wondering about Downton Abbey.
Last year the series opened with 8.43 million 38.0%
Embarrassing for Doctor Who losing by 3m to XF and seemingly losing to Pointless. 7.3m for XF, held up much better than people thought and not dented much by DW.
I think the rugby on itv 4 will have affected XF more than DW
How ironic that the people who were gloating about XF's decrease and wouldn't accept its huge timeshift ratings are now defending Doctor Who's bigger decrease and predicting a big timeshift as an excuse,..
Looks like it held up ok. 3 million ahead of Dr Who is alot more than people on here were predicting.
Exactly and isnt it also getting 2 million or so on timeshift.
So still a big difference between the two. Most on here seem to forget to compare like with like.
Do we think Downton Abbey will get higher ratings than The X Factor. If this happens will it be the first time
I expect DA to be in the mid 7s. So I reckon they will flip between the two for 1st/2nd place... well, until IAC arrives and most likely will get 8m+ nightly. I think last year it was still getting a consistent 9m+/
That is poor for DW and there's no point people trying to pretend otherwise.
I agree although it is expected as this is where most of last series was. It seems this is where DW can now expect to be on average just like XF can now expect around 7m.
It will be interesting to see where DW finishes up - an overall decline looks likely based on last nights figures.
Bake Off manages to be must see TV - its demos are across the board like Doctor Who (?) so in my mind it's drama that seems to have been affected with the rise of catch up services.
Light entertainment shows such as I'm a Celeb, Strictly, BGT are still doing well.
The only dramas that seems to be 'must see live' are Sherlock and Downton Abbey
The difference between X Factor and Doctor Who is that nobody involved in making Who things for a minute it'll be Number 1 in the ratings. As long as it performs solidly and contnues with the huge timeshift and iPlayer figures then it's future is assured
Whereas ITV and Cowell are obsessed with being number 1 hence the maybe press machine. This year has been the worst ever - are we seriously still judging whether people can sing by their appearance? It certainly seems to be the case here. But it's regularly getting hammered by a show about cakes. That's why the decline in ratings is important and more troublesome than Who
7.00m (32.2%) excluding +1 for The X Factor (from Hassaan13)
And 7.33m with +1.
X Factor staying around 7m. ITV will be happy with that. Doctor Who appeals to the hardcore fans now. You get big ratings when you can pull in a casual audience along the way.
I must be absolutely crazy for posting all of this but here's how every Downton episode has rated before it comes back tonight. The averages exclude the specials as they are seen as seperate from the series.
Absolutely no idea how it will rate tonight, low 8's I think.

To be honest I only tend too use catch up for drama or a docu series I am watching.
I will def watch SCD and sometimes XF live if I can otherwise I never seem to bother.

Agreed. Do you think in a way it's a shame as drama is expensive to make and a genre that the British were renowned for. Jewel in the Crown, Brideshead Revisted etc.
If TV execs look at overnights then they will likely fill the schedules with more soaps, cheap filler reality TV and mindless light entertainment formats using soap actors

Yes EastEnders number 1

No it happened before two years or so ago. I think they'll both be around the 7m margin, DA will have the benefit of an X Factor lead in.

It is indeed. Cheryl and Grimmy are really killing it this year. Literally.

It lost a lot of momentum last series and became more of a catch-up drama than a must see drama.

You do start to wonder how low this could eventually go.
