Is it just me or are Windows 7 updates on go slow again? I'm talking specifically new builds, with brand new licensed copies of 7 across all versions , 32 & 64 bit, or even factory reset machines using the onboard recovery partitions.
This happens every now and then, it's all over the web, but I can't find anything solid from anyone else of late. Searching for, downloading and installing updates is taking up to 3-4 days on some of these builds. It's a pain in the ar*e!
Thank you.

This could easily be resolved by MS releasing an SP2 update with all the fixes integrated but it unfortunately isn't going to happen since all the resources are going into Win 10 now.
My advice for any home users looking to rebuild their PC would be to manually install SP1 (if not already part of the image/disc), followed by .NET framework 4.6 (if required) and IE11. This should in theory help jump start the process a bit.
This is all fine if they update quickly, but I suspect s2k you are right, MS would appear to be pushing all resource to 10, again. I know 7 is on extended support, but that's until 2020.
I usually do what you said and install SP1 (unless already included) then IE11, but still updates take an age.
I have quite a lot of the updates in a pack, also have SP1, but there are still a load more, that, like I said take forever to even search. I have a small Gigabyte netbook here, that's still searching after 24 hours.
It hasn't always been like this, only since MS took 7 out of mainstream and started forcing 10 on unsuspecting users.
That's one of my points, forcing 10 on you.

The older the OS, the more updates it will need after a clean install. No need for conspiracy theories.
The new Windows 10 model of new builds means that you will only ever have a modest number of updates, as the downloaded isos are only ever a few months out of date rather than multiple years.
Well obviously yes, I'm well aware of that, taking a system image before a factory reset is not always a good idea or possible.
Have you actually tried to update 7 after a fresh install lately? That's what I'm talking about, the time it takes.
A conspiracy theory? What? I just pointed out that wacky gave up searching for 7 updates after 2 days and just installed 10. Seems a bit of a push to 10 to me.
Isn't it strange then that on a clean install of Windows 7 SP1, Windows Update will now take hours or even days...
...until you install two 3MB hotfixes in sequence, KB3102810 and KB3135445, after which Windows Update only takes a few minutes.
They did the exact same thing with XP in its final days as well.
Never take things at face value with MS.
That's what I'm talking about. Lately they are taking days again.
Also, thank you Ulysses. Thank you. I never knew that installing those 2 updates in sequence fixes this problem.
Just tried it on a laptop and lo and behold, within 6 minutes 217 updates found and a further 4 minutes to download and start installing them.
Learn something new everyday I guess.
The PCs I was referring to in my original post were connected to a WSUS server so no problems locating/downloading the updates but the actual installing takes several hours due to the sheer amount of them post SP1.
That proves that it is not a case of Microsoft restricting the download speed of the updates, but the time it takes to actually install the updates. If the process can really be optimised by installing two specific updates first then maybe someone should report it to Microsoft as a bug.
I tried WSUS that just kept hanging forever at the installer stage and always has done for me, don't know, maybe I'm doing something wrong but followed the instructions to the letter.
If it's a bug Stig, it's been around years! Microsoft I guess are well aware of it. I know they take time to install, I can live with that.
But yes, those 2 updates installed in sequence actually do work, (tried twice now) so I too have copies of both 32 and 64 bit, thank you so much Ulysses777 for providing the fix that I've been searching for for what seems like a lifetime.
It wasn't me that gave up and installed W10, I gave up on the Control Panel "Check For Updates Button" and downloaded the "W10 readiness tool" just to get me up to date with Win7 updates. It worked as if it ... like .... jumped the queue!! Strangely enough I got mixed up with the posts too .. hence my "deleted" one that's spooky !!
Sorry wackyw, I meant 1manonthebog. Use Ulysses solution, it works for me, on 3rd laptop and so far all good.
No probs, I got mixed up too, and one one them was my post !! They sort of look similar. I also misread his name ... I read it as .. 1m on the bog .... I'm getting late onset dyslexia I reckon .. or middle aged wine fog.
Sorry 1manonthebog
It is slow but it'll get there eventually. Waiting for WU to search for updates, went away and had my dinner, came back, still hadn't finished so watched a TV show or two, oh look its found some. Now just have to download them all...
It finished sometime before bedtime. On a 40mb fibre BB line.
