If you're got g to name the most famous person in the world, it'd have to be someone that people from different nationalities/cultures and or different ages would recognise.
For all their infamy with younger people, I couldn't see many octogenarians pointing out Beyonce, Swifty or a Kardashian.
The Queen they would recognise. Obama as well.
For s more conventional celeb I'd say well established celebs would be more widely spotted: people like Madonna or Paul McCartney.
I'd have said Mohammad Ali too, but sadly he has gone recently.

If we're talking world leaders, I suspect Pope Francis would be well-known-he's
the spiritual head of 1.254 billion Roman Catholics, and he seems to have a good
relationship with the media.
The 14th Dalai Lama,Tenzin Gyatso, would also be known as the leader of the Gelug group of Tibetian Buddhism, which would have numerous followers.
Also since we're discussing religious leaders, it's often forgotten that
the Queen of England is also Supreme Governor of the CoE.
It's complicated as there are different types of fame. A celebrity is really someone in the entertainment business or behaves as if they're in the entertainment business. But sports stars, political and business leaders, cultural and religious leaders all get roped into the 'celeb' title.
Bill Gates was a dollar billionaire before many people knew who he was. Once he became the world's richest man, he was a celebrity!!
In politics the President of the United States, the Queen, Putin. In entertainment depends on what you're interested in .Lots of people have never heard of Adele or Bieber or David Beckham or the Kardashians.

I bet 90% of them couldn't pick him out of a line-up if he was dressed in his civvies...
Yes, Michael jackson seems to be one of those celebrities, dead or alive, that everyone has heard of. Even little kids know who he was, it is astounding. My 4 year old nephew told me that Michael jackson had died when it happened.:o

Maybe Madonna or even Prince William if he counts?

Well, the Queen of England, and President Michael D. Higgins of Ireland, do fit the
definition of a "celebrity":

Could you have a head of state that wasn't a celebrity? By definition, such people
have to appear in public often.

Whoever said Adele is having a laugh.
Good at what he does and entertaining too.

World famous for over 50 years and has always looked pretty much the same*, so instantly recognisiable.
*even if he does look a bit like a waxwork that has been left by a radiator these days
