Honestly, it's probably a footballer. There are people that live in some countries in the world that don't really have access to televisions but will still wear a football shirt with a player's name on the back.

You've got to think about who is famous in China and India as that accounts for a quarter of the world's population.

    Adele probably?

Maybe Madonna or even Prince William if he counts?

He'd be a good choice. Madonna might also be near the top of the list. I think Madonna might be very well known to youngsters of the 1980s and today. The celebrities who I think would be incredibly well known to young people of today are:

    Justin Bieber
    Beyoncé
    Taylor Swift
One Direction (even though some of them have come away from the band)
    Lady Gaga

I think that Prince Harry is equally well known, he certainly gets more involved than his brother, and seems more popular.

I'd imagine Barack Obama would be the one. Not only is he the current US president but he's the first black one and will be known throughout Africa by people who might not have identified George W. Bush or Bill Clinton.

    Mick Jagger?
The Stones are a big selling band, gig worldwide and have been going for years.
They have made Press headlines pretty much all over the world in their time.

And isn't Top Gear sold to every country in the word? So maybe all age groups from all countries might know Clarkson etc?

And I'd think most age groups i most countries would also know Madonna.

I assume this is a joke, I doubt if many people under 30 have even heard of him. ;-)

Yes, Michael jackson seems to be one of those celebrities, dead or alive, that everyone has heard of. Even little kids know who he was, it is astounding. My 4 year old nephew told me that Michael jackson had died when it happened.:o

He's always the first one to pop into my head for things like this.

The Rolling Stones might be able to sell out a stadium in many places but I doubt whether the majority of people in Asia, Africa and South America have heard of them.

I have always been sure the previous version of Top Gear's popularity worldwide was widely exaggerated.

I would have absolutely no idea what Taylor Swift looked like. You show me photographs of half a dozen young women, I would not be able to pick her out.

Most recognisable faces or names would be the Queen and Obama.

Usain Bolt, Ronaldo, Serena, Tiger Woods, from sport. Music is much more difficult. Wasn't Paul McCartney famously not recognised or known recently? Madonna would be one.

Actors are quite difficult to name the most famous either.

Up till he died I'd say it was definitely Muhammad Ali. Now, probably Christiano Ronaldo or Messi or Usain Bolt.
